Thanks for the info Karsten, will be heading up there late August for the races. Looks like it could be quite spectacular (and still I have people at work saying "Why???")
As far as the roads go, would mud terrain
tyres be OK, or should I be looking at a set of all terrains. I already have 5 x MT's so would only need a spare carcass. The tyre wear factor isn't an issue with me as the
tyres are only about $160 each, versus a new set of rims, AT
tyres with spare wheel + spare carcass at ~$1500+.
This is my first reaay "big" trip and I'm still working out what is needed.

Gary, don't go overboard buying new
tyres. Here the locals all use skinny
tyres and split rims usually. Depending on which road you are coming up on make sure you lower your tyre pressure a bit to allow some movement in the
tyres when you get into Sturt's Stony Desert - high tyre pressure means that sharp rocks and gibbers puncture. Have a safe trip - see you at the races.
