Went across lat Sept.
Recommend the Waldatta Outback center in Port Augusta. Well worth the entry price.
Take a joy flight from the
Nullarbor Roadhouse out over the Head of Bight ad see the cliffs properly and of course the whales form the air. The plane is based at the servo.
Cocklebiddy Cave is worth a look. We went in with our Camper. Road is fairly good. It is not signposted but iif you get one of those freebe maps from the visitor center in Ceduna it will tell you where the turn off is. The distances are correct and the turn is easy to miss. We walked / scrambled down to the cave entrance. There are layers of sea shells just poking out from the cave entrance walls about 40 to 50 meters below ground level. Spooky. Was really once an inland sea.
There are plenty of caves to see, but require some effort to find them. Asking at the roadhouses is the wat to go,
The real adventuruous go to the
Eyre Bird Sanctuary. Can only go so far and then need a ride in with Rangers. Didn't go there , but is a favourite with bird lovers. Also gets below freezing as late as September. Is right on the ocean.
Also there is a waterhole in the middle of nowhere, off the road and real easy to miss. Will be on the right on your way West. Something ?? (Not Something obviously) Rocks it is called. Way over to the western end of the Plain Again only about 5 k in from the highway and accessable with van or trailer. Strange place.
Of course the old Telegraph Station at
Eucla is a must, only because everyone goes and has a peek. Not much left and a really bad corrugated rod to the station but is only a few Ks from the road. Saw people taking their caravans down it last year.
A joy flight over the Super Pit at
Kalgoorlie is also a good one. The Pit Viewing platform will have moved by now. The old one was a bit ordinary to say the least. Take the joy flight.
Don't forget to go look at the still working turn of the century brothels in the next but one main street. Two left and they look cute.
Go down to
Esperance and visit the Cape Le Grand national Park. Fabuluous scenery and some really super
places to camp. Really special. But be prepared for it to be a bit windy. And of coyrse like all parks in WA, a fairly hefty entrance fee. Manned entrance gate etc But really
good camp sites.
Wind farm in
Esperance is cute if you havent seen a wind farm before. Did I already say it might be Windy (WA means Windy Always.)
The Whale World museum at
Albany is first rate. It is the old Whaling station turned into a museum. Will fill half a day easy. It is rare to see what was a fully functional commercial enterprise turned into a museum.
Don't miss
the Pinnacles on the way to
Geraldton and
Kalbarri just to the Norh of
Geraldton.
Have fun.
