If you buy the Auslig 2 CD Australia series as advertised on this sites Adventure Shop, you can then go to the OziExplorer website and download the georeferencing files for these 2 cds. This will give you complete Australia-wide mapping using the latest Auslig maps fully georeferenced and ready to use.

Peter – there are several commercially available digital maps available that are suitable for use with OziExplorer. As the Exploroz team mentioned the digital copies of Auslig maps with coverage of all of Australia are one (and probably the best)option to start with. These are at a scale of 1:250,000. A company called Maptrax produces digital copies of maps at 1:1,000,000 (18 maps) and a number of 100,000 scale topo maps of various parts of Australia. Check out their web site for more details (http://www.maptrax.org/). They also have a variety of 1:25,000 scale topo and 1:50,000 scale “forestry” type maps with complete coverage of some states – these are excellent and show heaps (too much sometimes!) of detail. I have scanned in a number of unavailable 25,000 scale topo and various hydrographic maps myself. This is a little time consuming especially if you need to “stitch” pieces together to get the coverage you want. It is however worth the trouble as the detail on small scale maps is excellent. Dont bother doing this if the maps are available from Maptrax - paper copies are the same price as digital ones. You will find geo-referencing relatively easy and surprisingly accurate after you do it a few times. Always check a few known points to make sure you’ve got it right. The scale of maps you use depends on what your ultimate aim is. Smaller scale maps are best but more maps are required to cover a certain area (i.e. more $$). Start with the 250,000 scale maps and see how they work for you. Happy Mapping Greg
