100 series Front Diff

bamo

I Have just taken 3 teeth off the crown wheel in the front diff of my Landcruiser!!
Has anyone else had a problem with these diffs????
I was bogged in sand with a 1.4tonne work trailer hooked on. In low range first gear.?????

Sorry, not funny, but yes very common it would appear. If it's not a 100 series LC blowing a front diff it's a 3.0td patrol blowing an engine....
(sorry, series II only for all the nit pickers).

Just make sure Tojo fix it under warranty, don't take any crap from them.

Get onto your dealer and tell him you want the "real 4x4 front diff" (as opposed to the school shuttle bus variety).

Solid Diff. Apparently the same diff used in the rear off a hilux . Maybe this is why Toyota have brought out IFS in the turbo Diesel and V8 petrol models

"Solid Diff".......sorry mate but when you're talking about a 100 series; that is simply an oxymoron......IFS or Beam axle, the 100s has a very poor reputation up front. Ask Mr Lexic....he's had a few front end dramas too and his is a beam axle jobbie too.

Good luck with it though; I know that they are good car in most other respects.

Do a search on the Forum. I remembered someone highlighting the problem of the 100LC from diff weakness and a remachined flanged nut or the likes will cure it for good...

If it was a beam axle you probably were a bit unlucky although it sounds as if you were giving it a hard time. I have driven quite a few 78 series which I believe is the same as in the 100 standard and I have not personally experienced or seen any problem which includes underground work which requires constand low range and a significant amount of time absolutly flat in reverse (4500rpm) up declines

I have looked at this problem and came to the conclusion that some of the pinion nuts are to poorly made allowing the pinion to move forward enough to lock up the diff. I believe that a stronger nut with a flange instead of a washer would cure the problem but I have not had the oportunity to try it yet. Eric.

I've read forumites comments about the solid spacer being fitted. Question. Who would you need to speak to regarding having one made or purchased off the shelf.
If it saves it happening again, it would be worth the money.
