Trephina Gorge

We'll be in the Centre in the next few weeks, and for a change I'm taking my wife and daughters. Does anyone know any good camping spots in the East Macs? Or more importantly, any places to avoid?

If you are heading to east macs on the Ross highway from Alice turn right at the sign to N dala gorge. A few k in on your left as you drive through the riverbed is a great camping spot.
Heaps of grass with a huge red stone bluff maybe a couple of hundred feet high behind campsite you can,t miss it, pretty speccy although a little cold in the morning untill the sun rises over the bluff. I would highly recommend it.
Also if you head toward Trephina Gorge you will turn off Ross highway to the left onto the gravel road to Trephina, look for the sign to John Hayes rockhole. Campings ok but the walks are spectactular.

Enjoy

G'day Bob,

Trephina Campground isn't very exciting but it is a nice area in which to go for a walk especially in the early morning.

Don't forget Ruby Gap which is closeby and where there are some good bush camping sites along the river banks.

Go to my website and read artlicle on Eastern Macdonnell Loop and also Ruby Gap. It was written in the mid 90's but is still pretty much current. Some places have closed down out that way such as Ross River and Arltunga Campground.

There is also another loop to the north through Cattlewater Pass to the Plenty Highway. I drove that last November.

Enjoy
