Carrying them was always compulsory for all cars, its just fitting them wasnt. IO don't have them but hoping to be in Dinner Plain in Sept so have to get some.

As you say T-Man the issue will be what road is an Alpine Road?

Oops, got some konig diamond pattern chains to suit jackeroo, pathfinder etc. $200.00 never been on the car except to trial fit. In melbourne area, 9734 1663, 0402 467 056. (half price at least)

you have to carry them but they never ask to see the chain size vs tyre size?

I have no idea why on many maps they dont state compulsary chain carrying roads in the alpine areas?

when you look at some chains and tyre depths and channel width between treads tyres may not benefit from chains apart from maybe the ability to break a ice patch up to be driven over.

seen plenty of real snow driving over seas they had no chains (although iceland beasts have spiked tyres.

While it is probably a good idea to carry chains - here on the NSW side of the Kos NP it is not mandatory for 4WDrives to carry them - and that includes soft roaders.

We go skiing down to Koziusko once a year , but now that I've got a troopy I'm going to take it, instead of the ford falcon we normally go in. PS: we have already slipped on black ice, ( near Smiggin Hole) in the falcon & smacked into another car.

I didn't think I would have to carry snow chains for the troopy, but after reading Trucksters post it seems that it's mandatory now???? I thought/hoped that I was finally getting away without having to carry chains anymore.

The troopys' tyres are BG Goodrich All Terrain Tyres, 32x11.5,R15.
Any idea how much for chains?

or I suppose I can hire them down at Jindabyne, hoping they have chains to suit that tyre!

Mansfield police have been known to get drivers to "prove" that the chains actually fit the vehicle. Work mate had to do this once and he and the cop new each other.

Fine was $165.00 and 3 demerit points a couple of years ago for not carrying them on designated Alpine rds.

The fine is for "disobeying a traffic sign" under Vic Roads regulation.

Easy way to get bigger chains is to buy the biggest ones near to your size, go to Pirahna in Dorset rd and buy high tensile wheel chain from them in lengths. They sell it by the metre. It is approved and rated snow chain that has been made for vehicles. I extended my chains to fit 33 inch tyres and just chopped and added a few links. Worked perfectly.
