GU 3.0lt fuel economy

HI ALL
I know there have been a few posts regarding this topic but I've recently purchased
a 2004 GU 3.0lt TDi auto (our first diesel) which had 4000kms on the clock. We have taken it to Syd to Maroochy & back with 7 people, air con on & luggage on the roof & it averaged 11.5lt/100kms. However recently with city driving (no peak hour) it is returning 13.5lt/100kms which, when reading previous posts, appears to be a little on the high side. (Still better than my EB Ford wagon.) The vehicle has only done 8000kms and I would like to know if this is about right & if it is true that mileage may improve as it runs in some more. Its a great vehicle & the view is also great. We should have made the switch earlier. Any comments appreciated.

You will not run a diesel in @ 4000k, but by 40000 you will be run in though

Hi Frank,

Your consumption seems about right. In city driving its the takeoff from stops that kill the consumption. My peak hour running returns about 12 l/100kms, but thats freeway running with few total stops or acceleration to speed limit. If you have lots of stop/starts, thats probably why you are getting worse consumption.

Mine has now done 20,000kms and have probably improved 1 l/100kms over its 5,000km consumption average.

I averaged 12.75 to Perth and back from Melbourne, 4 people and loaded roof rack. Get around the 14's in town but thats with tools in the back and heaps of stop/start. Mine is an auto with about 53k on it. Cant say I've noticed much if any improvement over that time. I don't check it a lot 'cos now I own it I gotta live with it. Heaps better than a petrol though.

My manual 2003 3.0 averages about 13.5l/km around town running 285/75/16's. Allow for a little odometer error due to tyre size and actual is a little lower. I too have read other posts about 1000km per (both) tanks but have to accept that for some reason 800-850 is all I will get. Mine has done about 33,000 now and there was a definate improvement after somewhere towards 20,000.

I found my GU speedo was out by 6% (read high) before I put the 285/75 tyres on. Now it is very accurate (reads 100km/hr at real 101km/hr by Garmin V GPS).

I have "tested" a few other standard GU's and all were out by 5-7%. The claims of 1,000kms per tanks is really closer to 930 due to speedo error. I regularly get 900+ kms from both tanks from peakhour freeway running, which would be around 1,000kms on standard tyres.

I get 10.5-11L/10km out of my GQ 4.2 non turbo regularly 800-850km before refilling. That is with 32 BFG AT tyres. That was around town and with a bit of highway driving.

My new GU 4.2TDi is getting a worse figure ~750-800km based on the main tank only (same as GQ). I have not done a good run to test it as its only just done 3000km. I do feel I Am using the extra power though that the GQ lacked! Maybe that is the difference for me but I am hoping it gets better as it runs in. Driving to Perth later in the year so that will sort it out.

My 3 litre manual does about 8.5k/litre or around 900k on both tanks say 110 litres,dont totally empty main tank.It has winch b/bar full length rack and weighs close to 2800kg.I have 100000k on 2002 model.

My 3LGU T/D gets around 11L/100km on the open road and about 13L/100km in town which as in your case was better than my EA Falcon. Don't forget the GU weighs in at nearly 2.5t
