Patrol front end

My '90 gq swb has recently started to make the occasional creaking thumping noise at the front end, sometimes you can even feel it through the floorpan.
It seems to occur when you start moving or when you are turning at junctions and is usually a single thump rather than repeated ones.
I've had a look with my untrained eye at the underside and all seems to be in good order and it's still driving fine with no noticable problems in either the suspension or transmission. The steering seems ok as well.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Jack up your engine and look for gaps in the mounts.

This sounds similar to an issue I had with a 89 GQ. Mine was a thump which seemed to be worse when the undercarriage was wet. I would have put money on it that it was coming from the suspension and consequently went about changing all this. It ended up being the body mounts. Over a period of time the rubber wears and the metal inserts come in contact with either the chassis or the body. The best way to test it is to give the vehicle a good hose down underneath and go for a run. If it's worse then I suggest you start there.

Its the same age as the GQ's so perhaps the body mounts are similiar in composition and is also wearing out?

If you have done a fair bit of 4wd or the previous owner had it could be a crack in the floor pan.
You would feel this under the drivers left foot when the 4x4 is turning or twisting.
It sounds like a knock.

The bodymount rubbers will be flogged out. It will clunk while turning corners, and worse in the wet?

They are for a LWB around $370-400 a complete set.

Takes about 2 hours to do the whole truck.

They also crack as said by eric, where floor pan and firewall meet under the pedals..

Other thing check other bushes in front end, eg control arms, panhard, etc.

I think you will find it is the body mounts, have found similar problem on three seperate gq`s (body inclined to slip around on mounts was initonaly hard to find noise sourse easy to fix though)
