Another Grease question

Earvin Johnson

Roachie's question prompted me.

When travelling for extended periods, say 5000k or more, on dusty roads, is it a good idea to take a grease gun with you and give the old girl a couple of pumps every so often? If so how often would be recommended?

Please no Benny Hill gags on giving the "old girl a couple of pumps".

We always take the grease gun and depending on conditions(water crossings etc) usually grease the fourby every 3 to 4 days, more often crossing rivers. You also get to have a good look under the 4WD for damage, loose things and so on.

Absolutely...and as previously pointed out it is an ideal time to check out the underside.

I recently completed 15,500k trip and did 3 oil changes, fuel filter and grease.

Needed each and everyone of them too :-)

I carry a small grease gun with me at all times & usually give a full grease of steering knuckles & drive shaft universals every 10,000km or six monthly (The manual says 20,000km or 12 monthly). Under severe driving conditions every 5000km. If I'm preparing for a trip I give the bus a grease anyway just to be sure.

Earvin,
I must be keen, if I'm taking my bush hack out for a raz I'll grease it before and after the run, usually day runs, if I'm out for a longer run I'll usually grease up before and after the trip, again depends on what I'm doing, if I'm doing strictly bitumen and gravel I'll stick to the 5K rule when I do the oil and filter, water sand and mud will be a bit more enthusiatic. Doesn't take a minute and grease is cheap.

Personally I use KY jelly when necessary, and the old girl is quite happy, she takes the rough with the smooth and have a grease gun for the Toyo and use it once in 6 months and that keeps her happy..(she doesn't need much to have her oozing)..Recommend they both be serviced on a regular basis. Sorry but I don't like travelling extended over long periods .
Hope this helps
