Most map books just have the major roads. Who produces the best map for finding the out of the way places?

I use the CMA (Central Mapping Agency) 1:25 000 maps. About $8-9 each and very comprehensive. The latest ones have an aerial photo of the area on the other side. You can get these from Lands Departments, camping stores, map shops etc. An excellent resource, you can never have too many maps I reckon.

I guess one of the major advantages I see in these maps is that they have contour lines and quite detailed topography. I find this helpful in appreciating 'what's in store' in an area I may be heading for if driving or bushwalking. They do seem to show many more tracks because they are not driving/tourist maps. This helps you get away from it all just a bit easier!

It depends - there are stacks of different types of maps out there. Your best bet is to go to a decent map shop, tell them what you want to do and they'll set you straight.

Motherhen, one of the better maps that I have found showing most minor roads and some tracks are the free (if your a member) ones available from your local motor organisation i.e. RAA in SA, RACQ Qld, NRMA NSW, RACV etc.etc.
You can use these to plan your trips and get the detail of what to do off the net.
I find the HEMA or Westprint maps very good also.

We use all digital maps these days and use the Natmap Raster 250K and Hema GDT, Meridian VIC, Ratser 50K SW WA. These coupled with OziExplorer are an excellent fit for general vehicle based travelling. 50K, 100K maps are great for walking however you tend to need many for vehicle based work. I guess it depends on what you are looking for and the level of exploring you want to do in a specific area.

Prior to our fully digital fitout we used (and still take) a Hema road atlas. We also used Hema & Westprint paper maps.

BTW: If you are after any 25 or 50K maps we have access to all of them via the shop at ExplorOz we have just need been able to easily maintain them all on the database yet. We are working on it. Once they are loaded and geo-referenced into the Map Geometry system they will be enabled online, however if you want one now let me know.

I just bought some Sunmap 1:25000 maps today (Qld) and the map shop guy told me that the Govt was in the process of changing from paper maps to digital. He said soon we would be able to just ask for a map and then buy it on disk. Save me scanning it in so I can use it on OziExplorer.

Yes this is basically correct - I am actually going to the IMTA Map Fair in a few weeks and this is one of the large topics on the agenda. We are looking toward online digital map delivery. The work we have been doing in our current round of online mapping is part of this future. We are trying to bed down some of the online issues before we source the licenses for the source data. We are also working on building some of our own specifc interest area data designed and targeted at WD and outback travel. It all sound very interesting we will know more at the end of the month.
