I use the CMA (Central Mapping Agency) 1:25 000 maps. About $8-9 each and very comprehensive. The latest ones have an aerial photo of the area on the other side. You can get these from Lands Departments, camping stores, map shops etc. An excellent resource, you can never have too many maps I reckon.

It depends - there are stacks of different types of maps out there. Your best bet is to go to a decent map shop, tell them what you want to do and they'll set you straight.

Motherhen, one of the better maps that I have found showing most minor roads and some tracks are the free (if your a member) ones available from your local motor organisation i.e. RAA in SA, RACQ Qld, NRMA NSW, RACV etc.etc.
You can use these to plan your trips and get the detail of what to do off the net.
I find the HEMA or Westprint maps very good also.

We use all digital maps these days and use the Natmap Raster 250K and Hema GDT, Meridian VIC, Ratser 50K SW WA. These coupled with OziExplorer are an excellent fit for general vehicle based travelling. 50K, 100K maps are great for walking however you tend to need many for vehicle based work. I guess it depends on what you are looking for and the level of exploring you want to do in a specific area.

Prior to our fully digital fitout we used (and still take) a Hema road atlas. We also used Hema & Westprint paper maps.

BTW: If you are after any 25 or 50K maps we have access to all of them via the shop at ExplorOz we have just need been able to easily maintain them all on the database yet. We are working on it. Once they are loaded and geo-referenced into the Map Geometry system they will be enabled online, however if you want one now let me know.
