Troopy advice request

Scruff

Hi

Just contemplating buying my first 4x4 since getting to Australia, found a HZJ75 Troopy 1996 model ex NT which I love (low kms, bit red dusty, otherwise well fitted out) but it lacks a bit of grunt and go. I was wondering if anyone out there had any experience of fitting aftermarket turbos on these wagons (good or bad) All feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers

The Scruff

Have been running a 1992 HZJ75 Troopy for the past 2 and bit years (non turbo)
as a general tourer, usually lugging a caravan and the usual amount of gear to
operate independant of the van. Whilst not an obsolute powerhouse machine, have never found it too lacking in the general requirements of towing and cruising.
Have had considerable exposure to the 1HZ diesel over the past 10 years through
other family members and fleet vehicles and have found quite a vast difference in the characteristics of some vehicles. Some have been noticably more LAZY than others although all are basically stock as a rock. Some near new, some medium and high mileage. I have formed the opinion over this time that a lot of the power varience of the same motor is due to tuning, fuel pump and injectors.
Cant comment much on the turbo version or addition as I haven't had a lot to do with them.
Generally an absolute top vehicle and with relative minor aftermarket tickles,
suspension and so on will go anywhere and back whilst carrying half the house with you.

yes scruff a turbo makes a heap of difference, i had one fitted cost all up about $3000. the drivability was great, but when you go bush i don't think you realy need it & $3000 can get you a lot longer holiday or a good peace of hardware like a hf radio, diff locks or long range tanks. BUT MATE DID SHE GO WELL.

I have a '96 Troopy Scruff and contemplated a turbo as well. However, I think the few grand was better placed in replacing the suspension, a front diff lock and giving myself comfortable seats. Troopy's are not the fastest thing around by a long shot, accept it and get some comfort so that you can enjoy the grunt off the road.

good luck
