Tyres for on road use only

Submitted: Monday, Oct 04, 2004 at 13:52

Moose

Am considering buying a second set of tyres. Cruiser currently has muddies and being our only vehicle it gets used a hell of a lot around town by the wife. Seems a pity to wear out the muddies and I'm beginning to think that a second set of on road tyres wouldn't be a bad investment. Yeah - a bit of a hassle changing them over but I reckon I could handle it - it's not as if I'd have to do it every other day. Anyway I'm considering a set of purely on road tyres. I'm very happy with the muddies for the offroad stuff I do and I wouldn't consider going back to ATs to cover both areas. So my question is, what on road tyres in the 275 or 285 x 16 type sizes have readers had good mileage from?

Toyo Opats.

Search the archives on them, they have a REALLY REALLY good reputation. Looked at them for wifes pathy, and they were good, but a little too 'road' tire for my liking.

For what it's worth, our Discovery has been to Cape York (Oct 2002) and crossed the Simpson (May 2004) on Toyo OPATS, among a lot of other bush trips. We did suffer a couple of rock fractures in central OZ in the last 12 months but I think that's a bit of a 'luck of the draw' thing - seen quite a few fractured Michelins too. Overall, pretty happy with the Toyos, esp. the original purchase price cf. BFG & Michelin equivalents.

Hi ya Moose, did the same thing on my Jack, had BFG AT's on and was worried about wearing the good tyres down using them just for running about.
looked in the trading post and found a tyre place that sold second hand tyres.
Went and had a look at what he had and ended uo with some Bridgestone Duellers HT's 215/80/16 for $120.oo each fitted and balanced. Some of the tyres still had dimples on them.
I know you were after a particular brand but thought my experience would be interesting to you.

Moose,
I kept the original grand treks for road use on my 100 series and have a set of good tyres on steel rims for offroad use.
Keep an eye on ebay and the trading post as many people when they get a new vehicle upgrade to alloys and offroad tyres and you occassionally see a set of new tyres on steel wheels at a pretty good price.

Can usually get the GrandTreks at a good price from the tyre places that do work for the Toyota dealers.
