GME TX3400 in GQ Patrol

Submitted: Monday, Aug 12, 2002 at 00:00

Kevin

The TX3400 has a main unit that can be hidden away with a small remote display unit for dash mounting.

Could someone tell me where I should mount the main unit? Will it fit behind the glovebox?

With thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin
Why not put it under the seat on the passengers side? Take the seat out to install it, easy place for maintenance.

Kevin just remember under the seat is often dirty and dusty and can be wet at times!

Kevin, I have 1 in my rodeo, I installed the main unit (which has the speaker, unless you use a extension speaker) inside the plastic cowling around my steering column. It fits nicely under the column, several zip tie's holds it snug and tight, and there is enough gap around the cowling lower dash for the speaker to be easily heard.
Under the seat can be a problem, with water, depends on what you get up too I guess, and kids shoving their feet/shoes etc under there, and the speaker is more remote from yourself.

Water is a possibility (if I feel that adventurous!) but children's feet, toys, &c. are an absolute certainty!

i mounted mine under the radio in the small compartment area in the centre dash piece. there is a steel cradle which holds the radio and the compartment together. i just drilled a coupla new holes into the steel cradle and mounted the face unit flush under the cd player (radio) and the main part in behind and it looks integrated...............but the compartment had to go.... which was almost useless anyway...and i am talkin about a GQ also...

I've got an older GQ with the centre console housing two separate units: a radio above a cassette unit. I presume that your centre console has a single combination unit, leaving several cms of space for the transceiver. Would that be right?

The TX4400 also fits in that spot perfectly, and no need to drill any holes.

yeah Kevin. i also had the maverick 88 model a few years ago which had the lower tape player.. i put a cd player there instead on the top section and the bottom section the uhf because i left the tape player out... it is so easy to install an aftermarket cd/tuner unit. It fits into the original cradle and uses the existing holes even then the dash just fits back around it... I have used pioneer in both cases though..

My wife came up with the brilliant idea of replacing the ashtray with the radio. This allowed us to save $100 by buying the TX3200.

It's a tight squeeze but it's almost there - I need to file away the corner of a bracket that holds the engine mounts .. sorry, the console ... and it 'should' fit in. Looks neat too.

Just in case you want to do this: I removed the brackets from the ashtray and attached them to the TX3200's cradle.

Thanks for all the advice!

Cheers,
Kevin
