Hello - The Magellan unit you are referring to is probably an Explorist 100. Basic as it gets, no background map, no PC connectivity and no ability to run off 12V power when in the car...All good features that are missing. Despite this it will give cords/save waypoints/tracks as good as any other (more expensive) GPS. Price at Kmart sounds reasonable - Magellan direct price is $250

Explorist 100

Get a Garmin G P S 12 or a Garmin ETREX as they are much easier to use.

Whatever you get make sure it has external connections for power, data and ideally an external antenna although the latter isn't necessary if it is mounted up on the dash in modern vehicles as a 12 channel gps will receive enough signal without the external antenna most of the time.
I've always used/bought Garmins as they are very reliable and easy to use.

geocacher (djcache) replied:

Tend to agree. I love my Magellan Meridian Platinum, but I can't see the point of a GPS that I can't externally power or connect to a PC.

I use mine with DiscoverAUS and with OziExplorer/3D and would be lost without the cable to the PC.

Imagine having to manually enter all the waypoints for geocaching. YUCK.

Waste of time, space, money and technology as it is. Can't believe Magellan *&^ed it up that badly...

PS Have sussed the zoom detail on DiscoverAUS. All minor roads on mine show when zoomed out... :o)
