I was thinking the other day, why is the temperature display and the temperate dial not "logically" connected together. ie My 40L engel allows me to dial in a setting between 1-10 rather than a particular temp. So it got me thinking...
Why the hell dont they write the temperate on the dial so its easy to dial in say 3deg and not worry about whether 3deg is half way between 1-2 on the dial. I understand that Dialing in 10 will not always guarantee -18 deg however it just seems stupid in this day and age that I cant easily dial in the temp I want the fridge to run at.
Crazy - or maybe perfectly logically. Anyone care to comment?
Cheers,
Glenno.

I'm guessing it's because Engel doesn't want every second person ringing them and asking why is it if I set my fridge to 4 deg that it reads 5 deg?
There would be dumb people everywhere wanting thm repaired under warranty.

I can only assume that to make them conserve power they would let the tempeture fluctuate a little to extend the run time and idle time. The less starts the less power it's going to use. If it tried to maintaine an exact temp it would probally be starting and stopping more often which would increase the power usage.
That's my guess anyway, others may disagree...

Jeff, according to Engel the swing motor they use doesn't have a high current draw at start up. The compressor piston starts with a very small swing gradually increasing to full stroke.....from their blurb, I haven't done any measurements

I think this subject was mentioned a couple of days ago in another post.
AFAIK it's all to do with the variation in ambient temperature. My Engel will freeze everything in it if i set on "2" when it's not a real hot day (say 10 degrees). However, it might need to be on "3" or higher when it's the middle of summer and the outside temp is 44 and I'm trying to keep the beer cold.

Meant to also add that my mate has got 2 Bushman fridges. He uses one as a freezer. These have digital readouts like the new engels. However, he reckons he can "dial in" the temp into the digital readout and the fridge will work to achieve that desired temp. Seems to work for him.

Glenno you're making it all too hard and worrying without reason. If the beer is warm crank it up. If the beer freezes then uncrank it. Don't worry about degrees - 4wding is about going bush and enjoying it and not about creating climate controlled environments. People used to put drinks in rivers to cool them and hang
coolgardie safes for food. I know it's looked down on to "rough it" nowadays but it is fun!! Try C482 over a fire instead of a fancy and expensive cooker. Try sleeping under the stars instead of inside super fine sand fly proof mesh. Try using moonlight and a torch instead of a fluorescent light. Try using a log instead of a light weight folding aluminium table! Get my drift? LOL

Glenno,
I read somewhere, that the Fridges with controls where you select a setting, you are actually setting the cycle time, ie, how long the compressor runs vs how long it stays off.
If you are in a hot climate, I think you will find you have to turn it up a bit more to keep things cool, and vice versa in a cool climate.
So as most people find, setting the temperature is a bit of a hit and miss affair, and that is why many people get a thermometer and use it to set the controls to get the correct temperature.
I'm not saying one way is better than another, but I personally have a Bushman fridge. It has a temperature read out, and you simply set the temperature you want and it cools down to that level and maintains the temperature within +/- 2 degrees. All this without any guess work.
Cheers,
Mal

Bloody hell, do you have thermometers hanging out of the fridge at home.
Mick has the right idea.My Engel is about 30 yrs old now and has never had a thermometer near it. It has spent a lot of its life riding around in trucks [real trucks] and I have never had to throw tucker away. Because its old it uses a bit of battery but I reckon 18 hrs on freeze in the heat isn't too bad.The newer ones are a little bit easier on the power.
Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photos
