Min size winch for GQ Patrol

My brother has had an offer for a 9000 LBS winch don't know the brand yet but was told $2000.00 new.The bloke says he will sell it for $1000.00. Now if it is a Warn winch will it be good enough for the GQ Patrol wagon 2.8TD?.

Also what is considered a fair cost on a second hand WARN? Winch. As well, what are the good brands to have as far as winches go.

TIA

I have a 9500lb Brawn on my GQ which is strong enough. 9000 should be OK for a 2.8 If it cost 2 grand new then it must be a Warn cos thats what they cost. I paid $1200 for my Brawn new but that was 2 years ago. Might have gone up in price now.

As a Brawn reseller, the retail on a 9500lb is $1450.00.
Always go a bit bigger than what you need as when you use them, you are not only just pulling the weight of the patrol but the resistance of the bog you are in as well. The couple of extra hundred bucks is worth it.

ARB in Rockhampton are selling 9000lb warn winchs new for $1185.00
so needless to say I think $1000.00 for a second hand one is a bit steep.

Thanks guys, If it is a WARN I will tell me brother to try for $800.00 as it should be worth that. Other than that maybe a new one may be the go as you get the warranty. Maybe I could buy it for my Jack but than again I don't come across too many people who need to be winched 8-)

9000 lbs is equal to 4082 kgs so there is a reasonable safety margin to allow for suction of a bogged Nissan or Tojo, but if you carry a snatch block then you will double the pull and should be able to get out of any sort of bog with it.

Only problem is that most winch extention straps are only rated at between 4.5 & 8 tonne so if you double block you will probably overload them. Only thing saving the strap is the fact that most 9,000lb electric winches can in reality only pull 5,000lb. Cheers Craig..........

Thanks for the reply guys. From all sounds of things it seems that the winch should be capable for the job. I just hope it is a WARN.

I dont pay more than $500 to $600 on a second hand winch , and yes i buy plenty lol . Warn winches have come down in price new , to combat the cheaper versions around. I run a 9000 superwinch and it gets a work out and a half . I even got a 3.5 ton Nissan out , that was bogged to the tray ;-) .

Also , be carefull that its not more than 5 years old , there are alot of shonks around peddling crap winches that are from slammed cars and are bent . Ring your local arb store for info on what year it is . Also make sure the tie rods arnt bent . If they are walk away.
