We did it a few years ago with a troopy and camper (six vehicles towing campers in the group), no problems but it is VERY rough and corrugated through the centre section past the airstip and escarpment country. The top and bottom sections in the sand are pretty good but slow travelling in the south due to Lenny not wanting to cross any sand dunes, it winds around a bit, I had my son calling the bends/corners as he was watching the live mapping on Oziexplorer on the laptop. We nearly went bush on loose sandy corners!
Take your time and make sure you stop and look at points of interest, lots to see especially if you have a laptop/
gps with maps as you can see features on the map which are very close but you would drive straight past otherwise.
I think you need a permit too from memory.
We took about 2 days from
Neale Junction to Warburton taking it easy as you wouldn't want a vehicle breakdown, very remote and not much traffic.

As Peter 2 said, take your time and see it all.
There is a good spot before
Cooper Creek about half way from
Neale Junction on left (can't remember the name of the gorge, you will see a track in though), but it has aboriginal paintings and some of the caves have the internals dammed up to collect water.
Have a look at
Waterfall Gorge too, a great spot.
Geoff.
