02 Jackaroo Clunking on hard lock

Submitted: Sunday, Jan 02, 2005 at 14:20

Jack fan

G'day all,
My 02 model jackaroo is clunking when you turn the wheel from hard right lock left again.

What could this be? Is it a simple rubber stop or is it something else
The car only has only done 30k and is not used in extremely difficult terrain.

As ats said grease the sterring lock stops. My old Navara had the same problem, a dob of grease on the stops, (two each wheel) fixed it up.

Gidday,Give a bit more info.Is the jack standing still does the noise come from inside or outside. It sounds to me it could be a loose nut that holds the steering wheel on.It could also be a loose steering box.A bit more info and we can narrow it down.

Hi locallaw,

can you please enlighten me - what are these steering locks ? are they fitted with nipples ? what am I looking for ?

.... even if they seem ok, it seems to me that it is good preventative maintenance to give them a dob of grease so they don't become a problem.

Thanks, Steve

Hello Jack fan,

I currently also have a problem with a knock in my '99TD steering and have traced the source to one of the components in the steering column. Although your description is slightly different, it will only take you a couple of minutes to check to see if it's in fact from the same source. My knock has appeared after only a similar mileage.

I suggest you check out my answer ID 86319 to post ID 18162 in the archives. Check for the knocking with the engine off, and give me a shout if this could be the source of your problem.

Good luck, Steve

Mine does it too, always has. But only if it's pointed downhill, and coming off hard right lock at parking speeds.

I never really worried about it. It's now down 90k and doesn't seem to have any other problem as a result.

Check all the drive shaft rubbers and if one is torn, that c/v is knocking...and you need to get it fixed yesterday.
