Hi everyone happy new year .

later this week i pick up the new 4wd (terracan, yeah i know the jokes) and pretty much have about 2500- 3000 left over to play with . I was wondering what your opinions on what you would buy for it.
I have not had a 4WD before so i have nothing from previous vehicles .

Thanks

Recovery kit is #1...

Why not drive it first, and see where its lacking before buying anything?

This is generally good advice Bruce, but they definitely need decent tyres. Drive it and you will be trading in a second hand set of tyres; swap them before it is driven.

A recovery kit opens up all sorts of possibilities. If you're talking a snatch strap and a few shackles, fine. If you're talking a bar and winch, this will set you back $3000 at least. The bars are custom made and cost around $1300 plus a winch and fitting, $1800? The Brawn portable winch is an option at around $1500 but you have to fit it in the car. Depends on what sort of driving you are planning to do.

Cheers,

Jim.

1) Basic everyday recovery kit.
2) driver training course - find out what your car can do.
3) UHF radio.

from your list

1 is essential, 2, 3 and 4 are luxuries.
Depends on what he is doing as to if he needs to blow a $k+ on a lift.

Again if your going through all that crap, you probably have bought the wrong car.

Suggest you re-read post 18587 and make your own judgement.

Firestang,

In this order,

1. Before you take delivery get new tyres fitted. Choices are limited due to speed and load rating. I got Toyo Opat A/T's, but there may be better available. Shop around. Will cost around $600 for 5 tyres.

2. Suspension upgrade, TJM: new shockers, rear springs and tweak up the torsion bars $900. Makes it handle well and gives you an extra 45mm lift. Shop around, things may have changed, at the time Pedders were $1100 and ARB couldn't help.

3. Dual Battery. It has to be an in car installation. Battery World Wantirna (Chris) did mine with a Redarc isolator, cabling to the rear and fitted an AGM 100 amp Battery (doubles as a portable power pack) for $700.

4. Fridge. The choice and dollars you spend is up to you.

1 and 2 are essential, 3 and 4 are luxuries.

Good luck with your Jerry Can.

Cheers,

Jim.

Thanks , i'm going to TJM tomorrow in geelong if they are open to check out what they can do for the suspension .Will chase tyres up as well .

The suggestion of the course is a good one , i have done courses at Monageeta (army proving ground ) nth of sunbury a few times in patrols cruisers, hilux and jackaroo and a couple of 11 tonn 4wd trucks through the mud and the gradients .
Knowing what mine will do is a great idea i have access to an area near cobbledicks ford in werribee . might get the wife to do it as well .

Thanks everyone

Get the blokes at TJM to talk to Rick at TJM Dandenong. To get extra front suspension travel the bump stops need to be trimmed. This was apparently not posssible (according to the fitters) until Rick (Manager) got involved and did it himself.

Cheers,

Jim.

Dealer was OK with warranty as they offer a similar upgrade themselves with Pedders gear.

Something no-one has mentioned yet is a decent air compressor. A recovery kit is important but I use my compressor more than my snatch strap.

Regardless of what closed-minded die hard Patrol and Landcruiser owners would tell you, you will never regret buying the Terracan.

I bought mine in March 2002 and have done 130,000 km without any problems.

After buying my 4WD I completed a 4WD training coarse at Mittagong, got some recovery gear and a set of Toyo A/T' Tyres and I was off.

I have now driven it off road extensively at Barrington Tops, Blue Mountains, Yengo and Yarramunmun without incident.

The only thing I would like to do to improve its performance is to upgrade and lift the suspension. It does scrape the bottom on some tracks.
