2.8 patrol over heating

HI all

I have a 98 patrol 2.8 td wagon ,it heats up at 100 kmhr i have replaced just about all the is to replace even a motor still heats up if anyone else has an idea of how to sort this out please help thanks

If you havent had the radiator to a repairer to have the tanks off each end/top you may need to as from what I can work out its the only way to clean out a radiator 100%.Sending our radiator in out of our Falcon next week as on steep long hills it gets hot other wise it runs fine.have been quoted $60 to have both tanks off and core flushed out.

lol to late john , the motor in it now is the second one i had this problem with the first motor, ( wife killed it), and i have brought a brand new nissan radiator (700$) how ever this did not fix the problem , i think you might be right, sell it might be the go, still id like to fix it so that i know its right. it dosent make sense i have replaced every thing and it still over heats not sure what to do next.

the car has 124000km, it will heat up rehardless of a/c on or off, yesterday was a33degress c day and a simple run to the tip at 110 km hr caused it to heat up

This might sound strange, but have you checked/replaced your air filter ? Over fueling will increase temp quite quickly at speed.
An intercooler/turbo hose could have delaminated inside and is blocking air flow.
Is the AC condenser blocked with mud not allowing airflow?

As it sounds like you have completely replaced the cooling system, it might be worth taking it to a diesel tuner to check for overfueling.

NO john i have not replaced the air cleaner for about 10,000 km i have a wet foam filter that goes around the paper element i will try that and see how i get on, i spoke to the people at tamworth diesel care and they dont think it sounds like over fueling because there is not a great deal of black smoke coming from the back , however they did recomend that i bring it in just to make sure.

Hi Handy
I own the same model and year as yours and it has only run hot when we were in QLD towing our camper trailer up the Melany Road which is very long and steep.
I have religously changed the coollant as per the manual since new with Nissan inhibitor so the radiator is still clean as a whistle and the engine runs just under half way on the temp guage.
If you have been changing the inhibitor from one brand to another I think you may have caused a build up of scale in the radiator core. A flush will not fix this. The only sure way is to remove the top and bottom tanks so the cores can be individually manually cleaned.
Our problem is the radiator being aluminium with plastic top and bottom tanks is a specialised job best left to the experts.
Have you tried removing the thermostat and testing it in a pot with hot water?

hey peter, yeah i thought the same as you , so i went and got another radiator from nissan and have only bee using nissan coolant in it however this did not fix the problem,thermostat has been replace and was tested in hot water pryer to installing., my temp guage runs ther same as yours , but whenever i get 100 kms plus it heats up

Do you have spot lights and or shade cloth in front of your radiator grill?
Are any of the radiator hoses kinked?
I seem to remember in the bottom hose arrangement a piece of pipe sits inside the rubber hose to stop the hose scunching together. possibly when the hoses were removed this bit has not been installed back in the correct position as when you pass 100 kph the hoses might be restricting the movement of the coollant.

Ahh yes the hose arrangement , i do belive i have not see a more strange hose arrangemnet , what i did was tee in with a flow meter to see just how much flow i was getting and to see if the water pump was on its way out , what i found was quite amazimg it had more then 1/2 its reqiured flow rate at 3000rpm , once again i was hitting my head on the wall,what to do now i dont know, i guess replace the head gasket and get the head crack tested.

yeah maybe , the nissan guages are about as basic as basic can be , its eithe cold normal or hot , they dont really give you a number to g rom , i will put in a numberd guage and just see. tanks for the tip.

handyandy,just a thought,is it loosing coolant,does it smell hot or are you just going by the temp gauge,which could mean faulty sender unit and or gauge.Any strange smells when you take off radiator cap?If it is loosing fluid go the cheap option,replace the cap or have the radiator professionally cleaned as what we think is cleaned can actually mean 90% blocked,

G'day Andy,
this may be a dumb Question but when you brought the new raditor did you fit the fan shroud to it when putting it in.
I have noticed alot of people remove these things so they can access the hoses easier. Fatal mistake the fan clutch gets flogged out in the first high speed run.(espesially aftermarket gear)
So when you do need it i.e high speed and hot day RAM air will not cool the engine and the fan clutch has lost viscosity.

Hope you find the cause
