Trans Continental Railway Line

Hi there

We are wanting to drive along the railway line from Tarcoola SA to Kalgoorlie WA in Sept 2005, and are just wanting to know from anyone who has done this trip ie: conditions, permits required and interesting sights along the way. Any comments would be much appreciated.

You can drive from Tarcoola to the turn off to Googs Track on the SA side and I think you can drive from Rawlinna to Kal, but not really sure on that one, some one on here will set me straight. I presume you would contact Rail Australia or what ever they are called this week, but others have tried and failed. Check the archives, I am sure it will be in there.

I did the trip across from Glendambo to Kalgoorlie in 2002.The track is now closed
as the yanks have bought the railway and closed everything .Tried to find out why but cannot get any answers. Anyone now crossing is liable to $5000 fine waiting at the end of the track as train drivers are told to get all license numbers of all vehicles.The track is open from Rawlinna to Kalgoorlie.When we crossed it the track was just that. The wooden sleepers under the rails have been replaced by concrete ones and the steel pins were thrown on the track which meant we drove over them for hundreds of kilometres. We had nine punctures and did five tyres on the trip. Lucky we had plenty of spares. Hope this helps you. I am going to do the Anne Beadell in May. Welcome to join us if you like.

Did the Connie sue & Anne Beadell in Nov 2004, met someone from Alice springs @ Rawlinna heading East to cook then up to vokes hill crn. I mentioned to him I heard it was closed but he didn't know that, in fact he was given a laminated sheet with all the distances of all stations from an employie. We traveled on but didn't see him after that so I don't know if he got through. Try Rining the Trans line.

In 2002 did Glendambo down to Ceduna via Googs and back up from Eucla to Forrest and along to Rawlinna (up the Connie Sue after that). Those train drivers were a friendly lot and were happy to let the horn go in acknowledgement of kids and us. Unless it is signed closed, which it wasn't when I did it, I would go again without hesitation. There are a couple of track choices along the route and it looked like Telstra has been laying a lot of cable so it must be a shared space?? I think there is a lot of mythology floating around about this issue. If you really want to get a feel for what's going on at present then I suggest you ring the caretaker/operator of the Forrest facility which includes a bloody big commercial air strip.
