sure is alot of driving. Motor should be A1 unless it has been flogged sensless for those 167k I was talking to an old taxi driver and he astounded me with some of the miles they got out of their vehicles but they were rarely turned off and left to cool down even oil changes were done in - out. the high km for age should be a good bargaining tool for a cheaper price

It amazes me that so may people concider a vehicle, passenger car or 4WD, stuffed after 100,000 K or so. It was'nt that long ago that if you did'nt get 200,00 miles out of your Kingswood, you'ed bought a lemon. As long a the vehicle's not flogged, regularly serviced and any repairs done when required, high K's should'nt be a problem in regard to reliability, only the markets reflection of resale value will be the issue. IMHO I'd rather buy a vehicle with high freeway K's than one that's been flogged to death off-road with half the K's.
I travel in excess of 45,000 K annualy just commuting to work and back. Why?.... Because in my line of work the salary is usually $20-25,000 more, working from the city than the suburbs.

I agree with you landie, so many experts on Land Rover have never owned one yet they hate them so much with no balance in their criticism of them. The only reason toyota and nissan have a good product is because for years they tried to better rover but never did so they copied the range rover drive train and suspension. range rover was voted 4x4 of the year so many times it won the 4x4 of the decade award and yes toyota and nissan have won many things too since they copied it; there are many countries in the world where tribal people live with no ciivilisation what so ever that have only ever seen a land rover no other vehicles; 80% of all land rovers built are still in use today all of this is because they are crap I DONT THINK SO the question asked was how far do some people go !!! cheers tony

We can all find stories and stats to back our view. But, importantly we all have our own preferences. Clearly, you are not a fan of Landrover and there is nothing wrong with that at all.

However, this thread started with someone askiong about a Landrover Defender for sale and was obviosuly looking for balance views and opinions.

So far you have stuck your 10 cents worth in despite being uninformed about the power system of the vehicle. Either provide some factual information for the poster and in a balanced way, or move on - most will accept you don't like them and leave it at that.

As for redbook values - they are a guide (yes guide), and bear little resemblance to the prices that these vehicles often change hands for.

My last word...........good luck, try and move on if you can't offer something a little more constructive.

Defender's are expensive because not many are sold every year. What happens is there is just enough around for the land rover die hards so that keeps the price up.
Glass's price guide means nothing when buying a 'fender.

Another thing to note is that the Tdi engine and probably TD5 only have a life expectincey of about 350K before needing a rebuilt and I believe the TD5 is not rebuildable, ie liners are not replaceable. Maybe the k's will give your mate some bargaining power ?

The 80% quote is a fact according to a landrover web site ;I find it hard to believe they would make it up for the whole world to see and judge if it was not true !! Do you really think you know better than the information that land rover put out; the fact that you are laughing about it speaks volumes. I don't dispute some of your criticism of rover, they have made many mistakes over the years, no manufacturer is perfect. But if you do some home work on the subject you will see how ridiculous you sound; and more people would listen to your point of view if you had some balance in your views. Why don't you do some research on the Camel Trophy and see how many countries all around the world it has been held in & how the competitors rate Land Rover & it's capabilities.
