Help Please - Buying New Landcruiser GXL

Submitted: Wednesday, Feb 02, 2005 at 11:29

Am intending to order a new Toyota Landcruiser 100 GXL Turbo Diesel Automatic. I do not have a trade-in.

I see that a discounter on the Internet can offer a net price of $68 700 (excludes dealer delivery charge of $1 695 and Qld State Govt delivery charges).
I was not thinking of adding accessories first off because of the extra tax. However, I suppose if a dealer can sweeten a deal by adding accessories at a discount that could be an option.

What advice please on avenues/ approach to get the most competitive new car price. What would be a best price?

Gday ev700

I did same 3 months ago... I'm Sydney based though. I would think you could do better based on my experience. I ended up getting mine at a country dealer about 3 hours out of Sydney.... much better deal than anyone in Sydney at that time.

I would think 65-67 delivered on road whould be in range.

If you put the accessories on for delivery you get the 3 year warranty on all of them rather than 1 as is standard... which may be a consideration for you.

You wont regret it... it is a brilliant drive.

cheers
John

ev700,
I bought an Auto 100 TD with no trade in and I found that all the dealers tried to muddy the waters with accessories to disguise the price . In the end it was impossible to compare them , as they were all offering this or that for free etc .
So I just said I want air con and floor mats and delivery - what's your best price .
Gilberts at Lidcombe in Sydney , were so far under the other prices , I thought that when I went back , he would say he had made a mistake . They hadn't though .
If somebody said "come back with your best price and I will beat it " I said give me the best price now or you will not hear from me again - I don't like screwing people like that .
Cheers ,
Willie

Jeff,

I hardly think shopping back prices makes you sleazy but that is a personal view. When buying my GU that was the only way to find out what a "real" price was as most dealers will not talk relistic prices unless you have done your homework and they know (or think you are) ready to buy. Also the saving was a little more than $100, with all accessories I got try $7-8k!

Darren I meant that the sleazes are the sales guys who just sit on their bums ripping people blind until someone with half clue come in and then they just get YOU to do THEIR work by finding the best price and then they just knock a little (maybe $100) off the price.
There is nothing wrong with shopping around, but being dishonest and screwing everyone off against everyone else I think is a mongrsl thing to do, however it is a personal view.
And no I'm not in the auto industry! :-)

Yes I think get quotes on a straightforward truck with no accessories is the only way to avoid confusion. That's good advice from you.

I decided on the color and the car and sent faxes to more than a dozen dealers in Melbourne and surrounding towns. Said I wanted to purchase a cruiser with air con on eg 10th February, no finance, no trade in please fax me back a drive away price. Can ask for options to be listed separately to be added on the $1000k service.

I got back about 8 quotes - faxed them back and said "thanks for your interest by such and such has quoted $XXXX. If you are able to beat this quote please send me an updated quote for purchase on 10th Feb. Got back about four quotes and then rang a couple, haggled a bit more and visited the dealer and signed the deal. Good price and felt that I was not pressured by wanker salesman and I was in control rather than playing their games - I guess that this is sort of what brokers do when buying for you.

This is what I tell people is the only way to negotiate new cars , dont go in because they think they have you . If you send a fax , they will do anything to get you there.

That is a cluey approach - straight forward, up front and economical for the ealer and buyer alike.

What I'll do is follow your advice and do what others have said too; approach at least one big country dealer as well and get quotes for a truck with no accessories to avoid confusion.

You could end up with a Nov/Dec 04 built beast that is complianced in Feb 05.
Good luck!
