I decided on the color and the car and sent faxes to more than a dozen dealers in
Melbourne and surrounding towns. Said I wanted to purchase a cruiser with air con on eg 10th February, no finance, no trade in please fax me back a drive away price. Can ask for options to be listed separately to be added on the $1000k service.
I got back about 8 quotes - faxed them back and said "thanks for your interest by such and such has quoted $XXXX. If you are able to beat this quote please send me an updated quote for purchase on 10th Feb. Got back about four quotes and then rang a couple, haggled a bit more and visited the dealer and signed the deal. Good price and felt that I was not pressured by wanker salesman and I was in control rather than playing their games - I guess that this is sort of what brokers do when buying for you.

That is a cluey approach - straight forward, up front and economical for the ealer and buyer alike.
What I'll do is follow your advice and do what others have said too; approach at least one big country dealer as well and get quotes for a truck with no
accessories to avoid confusion.
thanks again
