From my personal the ins premiums can be prohibitive if your son is on L or P plates.
My sons mod ute is in my name with him as nominated driver and premium is by memory about $280- but a larger excess applies when he drives it. So far his record is impeccable thank God!

Im in the process of putting a 350 chev small block in a 89 holden rodeo tray with a mate he is 30 years old and most insurance companies we have spoken to dont have an issue as long it is enginnered road worthy etc, law also stipulates that if your replacing a with a different motor it most not exceed the amount of polution the factory motor produced (this is what AAMI told us) therefore we have fitted straight gas to avoid this problem just thought id let ya know cause wouldnt want a insurance company not paying up after an accident..

as stated above i only see age an driving history as an issue..

Try for yourself. Call around. See the figures you are quoted, some kids on Oliimts are well over $1200-1800 - quoted, not many can afford it.

but depends onhis age, and his driving history, and who you actually talk to at the insurance company.

in qld your biggest problem will be getting the blue plate from the rego dept.

insurance for modifieds can be got fairly easily through justcars, but he will pay for it.

He is 22 and on his open licence and has a good record.

I think the insurance hurdle will probably be the last after

1. Building up the car
2. Getting it signed off by QLD Transport

I will let you all know how he makes out in the end.

I work on and go bush with lots of other modified, including chev powered, 4WD's, all insured thru TCIS, no problems on mods, so long as they are legal and engineered where aplicable.
One of them is still on P-plates, with a V8 4Runner, including big stereo, which is all insured(agreed value, only way to go) at a very good rate.

On a side note, if it has drum brakes all round, may I strongly suggest a disc brake front conversion.

unless he has done something incredible to it an fj40 would still be worth alot less than 10k and to my way of thinking vehicles worth less than that arnt worth insuring except 3rd party
