G'day plodder,
My wife and I stayed 3-4 days in April 2000.
We travelled in from
Injune (mostly unsealed) which
took about 3 hours at 80-90 km/h. The old diesel troopy
didn't like the hills and bends.
There is a small slab hut just short of the stop which is worth
a look.
We had our campsite to ourselves a site which had a small ochre mine(cave),
pit toilet and a creek. Spacious and plenty of trees, lovely spot.
We toured the park from there and only came across 3 other
parties (all
caravanning retirerees). One of them said they had
come from Mitchell.
We really felt like we had the park to ourselves.
At the northern? end of the park there is a track which climbs
a very high ridge. The track is signposted 4WD only and is very
steep and rocky. I used low range to make it more comfortable.
At the top is a small shelter and tank and makes a great lunch stop.
The top has very impressive 360 views including towards
Carnarvon gorge (can't see the gorge itself - not close enough).
The waterhole at one of the campsites was disappointing but the
whole region was in drought at the time.
All the rock formations and the rock art was worth seeing.
All the tracks except the one mentioned could be done in a Commodore
in the dry but in the wet might be a different story.
We enjoyed immensely, we could have stayed longer.
I would suggest to be completely self-sufficient with water, food and fuel
as it is fairly isolated.
Hope you have a good trip,
Cheers Moz
