Kaymar Rear Light on the spare wheel - any good

Submitted: Thursday, Feb 03, 2005 at 20:43

Member - Willie , Epping .Syd.

Evening All ,

I am thinking of adding a Kaymar telescopic light to my Kaymar spare wheel holder . However the actual light looks a bit pathetic and I wu
as wondering if any of you guys or gals has one and can let me know how well they work .
I need it for night time camp set ups .

Thanks ,

Willie .

Willie,

I have seen them fall of because the bracket has broken after a big trip.

I had a work light mounted on the roof rack with a switch in the cabin and that worked well.

The other way to light the camp is with one of those 12v fluoresence lights. Hang it off the roof rack and it will give out a lot of light.

Wayne ,
I checked out the idea of one on the roof racks , but I could not figure a good way to get the power up there and the wiring would probably get damaged tossing firewood up etc .
I have a neon light , but one on the wheel will be always "ready to go ".
Cheers ,
Willie .

Willie,

I had a TJM roof rack on the 80 series and made a bracket to mount the light on.
The cable was run from the engine bay via the inside of the snorkel and then ran along the cutter, cable tied to the legs of the roof rack, then to the light.
This worked well and didn't cause any problems with the loading of the roof rack.

Willie,
I've had one on my LC80 for 5 years or so and although it doesn't get a great deal of use, nevertheless it's very useful when it is used (does that make sense?).

I had some trouble with the switch a couple of times early on and ARB ended up replacing the rocker-type switch with a toggle switch and with a waterproof covering and its been trouble-free since.
Would "do it again".

Picking up on Wayne's comments (a) my bracket is still strong after trips up the CSR and GRR and Simpson and (b) agree that the Versa-Lite solution is darn good - I have both.

Dicky ,
I think the idea will be to get the Kaymar and upgrade the switch straight away and later look at upgrading the light .
Thanks for your input ,

I have both also . Versa and kaimar rear light . I fing the rear light handy for when you pull into camp at night and need to set up . Also works fantastic when you swivel it and point it towards the tail gate to find things in the rear ofthe car , or when you are cooking on the tail gate .

This is just to add to the 'positions' taken by the above Illuminati.

(1) I have had the subject light for 4 years and it came with the KAYMAR Bar and Spare Whel carrier.

(2) When being fitted, I had it wired so that it can be operated either externally or internally off the dash.

(3) If you use a Hi-lift Jack like I do and it is attached to the opposite side of the spare wheel to the said light then you are going to find that the Jack sits smack in front of the light. Bugger!. Solution:- make an off-set extention bracket for the light head.

(4) Doubles as a S H I T H O T and a bit reversing light that can be activated from within the truck.

(5) Use it how you like otherwise.

(6) Also it can be extremely useful in deterring those S H I T for brains that like to sit behind you flicking their lights at you for whatever reason.

NOTE: Mine has never had a mounting problem, however after one central Australia trip the external switch copped a guts full of b/dust and water which took half a can of 'spray' to get going again.

I like the suggestion of the sealed toggle switch arrangement in this aspect.

Have a nice one

Made my own, well AWILL did...
2 sections of box section, one slides inside other, drill hole, weld nut on side of hole on larger one, 1 bolt to pinch it up, weld the larger box to the wheel carrier.

PRICE $0.00 all offcuts

Light: weld a nut on top of the narrow box, screw a hella 181, or Predator, or what ever you like into it..

You now have light that WORKS, and is $130 cheaper than Kaymar

Hi Willie

I have one and have not had any problems with the mounting. However, looking around, there are far better lights that you could use.

Might see you around Epping sometime, we are near Boronia Park........
