Fuel prices in NZ

I've just come back from a 10 day self drive tour of NZ north island, mostly north of Auckland. The things I noticed:

91 Octane Petrol $1.20/litre, Diesel 75cents/litre. But before you get excited & contemplate taking your 4WD diesel there, there is also a road tax of $18/1000km for diesel vehicles!!

4WD's mostly were the smaller versions. But, I saw a lot of Nissan Safari's, the ones with the rounded turret. Do we have this model in Aus?

I went for a tour up to Cape Reinga (northern most point) along the 90 mile beach entirely on the sand, through breaking waves in a bus, that was not a 4WD!!!! The bus travelled at 90km on the sand.

I still have the sand fly bites to prove I went to NZ. Never the less, I had a good time, nice scenery, hardly any cops on the roads, ate lots of fish & chups.
