Site slow

Submitted: Thursday, Mar 03, 2005 at 23:06

Rosco - Bris.

I know it's been done to death, but why is it that this site, compared to most others I visit is slooooow.

Sometimes lightening fast, then sloooows down. Other times acceptably fast always. Other times I give it up in frustration. ADSL speeds here?????

Hi Rosco,

Im in Qld too not having any probs (forum page loads in 4 seconds)
Some pages seem to slow down when over 500 users are logged on to the site at once. I think thats when many people are accessing the same pages at once - cause Ive been working on the site elsewhere tonight and most pages load fast. Best to e-mail David Directly let him know what you notice so he can monitor the server when this is happening. We just need to know what is slow loading and when.

Thanks

Kerry

Kerry,
Its 6:20am in Sydney, and after 85 seconds to bring this query up I then checked and saw that there are 500 Anon logged.
A few days ago I emailed David directly re the slowness I experience with my Optus 2Mb cable and PC with 1Gb RAM & a 1.8Ghz chip.
I share Rosco's comments, and at times feel like channging my home page away from EOz to say Google. Pity, it's a great site otherwise.

Dunno but my experience is the same as yours, on cable here. The site always pings reasonably fast so the routing is ok but the loading of pages is very erratic. Maybe the server is overloaded at times. It's the same story at work also. Ijust live with it.

Last night I was working on the site and running several large reindex processes on the entire forum database. This did have a large database peformance drag. This morning being Friday is the time that the Topic Search counts are updated and this also hits the system very hard - I may change these to Sunday when the system is not as busy.

On a general front (and after much consultation with the ISP) I am at the moment re-writting the entire site onto a new platform and new server. I monitor the system all day and all night so I am usually aware of performance issues, rest assured it is being monitored and significant development effort invested to ensure future growth is catered for.

G'day David,
it's not really a big problem. Most pages load very well.
What at times is slow, as you have already explained, is the loading of the forum or forum topics.
I can understand that with the high number of concurrent users.
Re-indexing and "housekeeping" is a necessary evil and if you didn't do that there would be more complaints from inpatient users :-)

I'm happy, and if I have to wait at times then I just do something else and come back later.
Thanks for the great job you are doing,
Mike.

Thanks Mike,

Most of the time it is good and there are times when the user count exceeds about 600+ and many people are reading the forum at the same time then it is not as good.

Anyway I am still in the process of a full system re-write, what a crap job there are 100's of thousands of lines of code. The one advantage is that the code gets all tidied up and modernised in the process.

Take care
