COONGIE LAKES, WALKERS CROSSING

Submitted: Friday, Mar 04, 2005 at 11:04

Ruth from Birdsville Caravan Park

Good news, Coongie Lakes are full but Walkers Crossing closed a few days ago due to floding. Thought I'd let you know in case any early traveller was hoping to come through the Crossing. No, have no idea yet how long for. Weather hot and dry - although heat showers around. Hakuna matata!

Yes, well John, apparently that was my name when I MM'd the other day - someone else assumed it was me also. Ian is busy watering up (as they say here) - inside as well as outside!! Stinking hot - 47 for about the 8th day so forced to go to the Pub for refreshments tonight so we don't dehydrate. You should be a little cold from the weather reports.

Hi Ruth,

Brisvegas actually! Took a shot of us crossing the Pascoe last time we were at the Cape, very interesting crossing. Very educational as well, realised I wanted a diff locker - have done this trip twice and every time I seem to take the worng line out of the river on the other side. Get one front and one rear wheel in the air (not real good and one we can put down to driver error!). My wife reckons I never learn but she was wrong (not often wrong - checked that with her) on this occassion because I have the locker.

Expect things to warm up in Oct but still some chilly nights no doubt, would love to stay but after 3 months off will need to get back to work (hope to forget about work - I mean right down to which floor I work on) on this trip.

Kind regards

Hi Glenn, must have gone to the Pub and missed you last night. Old boy a bit sorry this a.m. Don't worry about Walkers - maybe the dust storm that arrived at 3:00 a.m. will be gone by August also! Can't see a thing - you'd think it was 5 minutes after daybreak instead of nearly 9 o'clock.
If it's any consolation we have the same problem with Walkers also.

G'day Ruth

Great to see the reports coming in from Birdsville. I notice the weather is kinda scorching. I was out at The Monument township a week ago and it wasn't too pleasant there either.

Coongie lLakes full...damn I wish Iwas going there on the way over to the Kimberly (noe there is a detour). We missed it last time as couldn;t get past Kudriemitchie. I am off to Kimberly April 29 so I hope the Plenty and Tanami will be drier than The Cooper region. Unfortnately Justine can't come along this time and isn't she peeved about that!!! I wil take Dad instead as a 70th Bday present.

Hope to catch you in Birsville again one day soon.

I haven't been to the Kimberley yet either - maybe we could have a girl's EO trip there. Sure Dad will enjoy the trip though. Keep the reports coming. See you soon.

Like to get a bit more so we can have it on the Menu for the National Gathering - don't need a rod, we just use handlines (no, not nets or gelly). Sounds like a disreputable crew you are bringing with you - should fit in with the rest of the EO people. LOL.. Hakuna matata, Eric.

G'day Ruth,

Good to see you and Ian are back. Hope you plan to keep your weather down there, ours is almost reasonable up here. Only had one dust storm this week. Mornings are cool, until work starts, anyway.

Have had 2 below average floods here(ho-hum), but better than nothing. Gotta keep your Barra alive, eh.

Went to Brissy for a fortnight, at end of Feb. No more boarding school for us.

Don't know any goss.

Finally, Bob - no more school! It's been a LONG time. What's Baby Girl going to do now? Last two mornings very pleasant at 18 - no A/C overnight. Had good send-off for Frank Booth on Sunday ('bout 400 here). Good run in river at moment - although down to 3.4 at Monkira and falling. Might 'cause little drama with Cattle Drive, do you think? Going to new "secret" yabbie hole this afternoon - Ian's going to take an Esky down there full (stubbies) and bring it home full (yabbies - big ones). He's waiting for the old crossing to have enough water to do his fish catching trick again. Not much goss here - same old, same old - but you'll have to get down here for the National Gathering. We're going to DL straight after the Races again this year.

Reckon we might save some money now, Ruth, eh? The Girl is off to South Africa on an exchange visit, in July, so may not get to EO gathering. Had planned an overnighter down there to meet everyone.

Ricko said there was a big farewell for Frank.

Better come up here for tea one night while you're at the Lakes. Keep in touch about that.

Might see you next week, planning to go to Telemetry Field Days at William Creek on 18-19th. Might be meeting Ricko in Birdsville as well and travel down together.

Storms about here during the week, but nothing to write home about!! River is still running in couple of the main channels here.

Leave a few crawchees for the tourists, eh!

Hooroo...

Sorry to be so long Bernie in replying - now, last two mornings it's been 18 overnight - very nice (no a/c needed) and about 34 max (very nice also) - hope this stays. River's rising at the moment - but 6 fish caught yesterday not far from here and this a.m. 18 large yabbies in the new "secret" yabbie hole (as opposed to last year's "secret" hole). We are going down this afternoon with a few pots (stubbies and yabbie pots that is) to catch some more. They were big yabbies, so we suspect they are on the move up river as the freshwater comes down. Now, the inside track was open and working at the weekend - for you it's going to depend how fast and far this new Diamantina water gets too - keep in touch.
