IAMGQ

Just bought 93 Diesel 4.2 GQ with 330000km on it. Since I have never had any Diesel 4WD before, I would like to find out some figure about this car when comparing with other owner's GQ.
(1) Fuel comsumption: ~ 13.8L / 100 km (city)
(2) Time to warm up to Operating Temp, : 20 mins
(3) 5th gear at 100km/h : ~ 2400 rpm
Anybody can share their figure with me so that I can analysis whether my figure are normal or abnormal. THANKS! Patrol mate.........

I have a 92 GQ 4.2 diesel @ 124,000km. Avg about 12.5l/100 city & she sits on 2400 rpm in 5th at 100km/hr. There is no shudder, but at about 90km/hr she does get a vibration - but OK at 95km/hr onwards.

Thanks for your figure, Gary! But do you find it really lack of torque on Hwy driving. I always need to downshift otherwise it quickly drop to 80km/h or even worse. What do you think ?

IAMGQ ..... The lack of highway performance is typical of mormally aspirated diesels - that's why most now have a turbo option. It still doesn't reach the same standard as petrol but it makes them better highway performers. Of course the big thing going for diesels is economy not performance and you are getting very good economy compared with a petrol Patrol!!

Thanks again Gary! By the way, are you using any foam type air filter. I use Finer filter since I bought my GQ but I have heard many people in this forum said foam type filter make not much difference when comparing to paper type filter.
Any idea ?

just a note on the fuel consumption ..i do not have a diesel..but i have a neighbor who does...he is running it on straight used cooking oil...has just recently done a trip to W.A and back without any hassles...he uses a toilet roll as a filter. he has a 100l tank in the back of the cruiser ( an older model ) it has water pipes from the motor through it to warm up the oil and a tap under the bonnet to switch over when he does about 10 ks...it smells like a fish & chip shop...he gets the oil for free cheers

Iamgq, i have a 92 4.2 diesal patrol 250,000ks, your figures are about right, i fitted extractors and a 2.5 in. pipe with a ford v8 stainless muffler, which also helped. I also have finer filters and they do give more power and better fuel economy, there are a lot of knockers for foam filters but i bet they have never tried them to compare. If you look at the motorcycle ind. they have been running foam filters from the factory as they perform much better. Like any thing they have to be serviced regulary. Have just done a desert trip and took two outer sleeves and just changed them as needed and cleaned them when i got home.Regards Col

Thanks Colin! however, I do have a question about foam filter. You know, it take up 2 foam filters to filter the air. I follow the cleaning procedure using Finer cleaner and I didn't leave any dry area when i reapply the treatment. However, what come to my mind is that wouldn't be more difficult for air intake because air need to pass so many layer of filter (2 filter with one outerlayer and one inner core, totally 4 layers!). Moreover, both filter are fully cover by the treatment grease, it may even harder for air to get it.
Usually i check the paper filter by point it to bright light e.g. Sun and see if I can still see through it. If I can see through it, it mean filter still clean. But it is impossible to see through the foam filter. If we use 2 paper filter, air just need to pass though 2 paper layer.
Yes, foam filter can be serviced and can get cleaner air to engine. But does it really improve the air intake in our Diesel gq case ?
I apologize for my long question...........

The thing about paper filters is that as they trap the dirt the filter slowly blokes up and restricts the air flow, with foam the dirt is absorbed by the oil not the foam filter which allows the air to flow freely. If you have doubts buy a paper filter and do a comparison. Take a look at modified raceing 4x4s and you will find that most of them run foam filters and swear by them. Col

I may try to get the paper filter and test them all. I may test them by using foam filter in precleaner and paper filter for main and vice versa.
Also i may try only paper filter for pre-cleaner and main.
I will tell you the result..........
Thanks!
