TRAVELLING TO CAPE MELVILLE, NTH QLD

Submitted: Thursday, May 10, 2001 at 00:00

Kev

We intend travelling to Cape Melville, Nth. Qld during late August early September 2001. via Cooktown, Hopevale, Wakooka Home Stead to Cape Melville National Park then travel the beach to Bathurst Bay and return via Old Kalpower Home Stead to Lakefield.
Q. 1 What is the east coast road condition.
Q. 2 Can we travel via the beach Cape Melville to Bathurst Bay.
I would be very interested to communicate with anyone who has been in that area.
Kev.

Kev,
We did that trek in 2000, we came from the north via Kalpower crossing then on to wakooka and into
Cape Melville, it is a beautiful area, we did not go through the beach ( I dont think it is possible) the road
between Wakooka Stn and Cooktown is tough, it is only 150km or so but it took us all day, very slow going
full of washouts and very rutted, do not travel alone.

Will,
We are going with two other vehicles and realise that the eastern track will be pretty rough. We feel that August / September should be the driest time of the year which should make the creek crossings bearable for petrol engines. Thanks Kev

Kate,
It's good to hear that there are others willing to challenge the wilderness. We leave on the 25/8/01. It will take us a couple of days to get to Cairns then intend going up the East Coast road to Cape Melville and back to Wakooka and across to Bathurst Bay and out through Lakefield N/P.
We have been finding it difficult to get Info. but found the rangers at Cooktown very helpful and also there is a book 'Cape York' 8th Edition 2001-2002 by Ron and Viv MOON. It has excellent trek notes and very good Info. We used a previous edition on a Cape York trip in 1997.

We will keep an eye out for you when we are up there, thanks for answering my request as you can see not many have but then again not many are brave enough to go there.
Kev
