Installing CB in 100 Series Landcruiser

Submitted: Saturday, Apr 02, 2005 at 01:45

I am thinking about fitting a GME Tx4400 or 3400 or a Uniden 013 to my Toyota Landcruiser 100 series. Has anyone done this exercise & if so any tips on a good location. Also any comments on my choice of radio would be welcomed as I have not purchased one yet.

I took out the double Din 6 stacker, have a single Din Apline and put its stacker in the console and put the tx4200 under the stereo in the now spare Din slot.
I think the new GME is the tx4400 and if I was to buy a new stereo it would be an MP3 instead of a stacker.

Hi,

Remote head is the way to go as you there is not a lot of mounting places in the new 100's. I have my unit under the carpet (drivers side - just under the conole) with the head mounted on the console. I also have an ext speaker mounted under the dash to get the sound out. The only problem i find is that i need to look down if i wish to change station or adjust. We normally mount them this way, but i have done a couple where the head is mounted on the dash, using a dash matt and small peice of wood under dash matt to screw into. This way - not holes are done in dash / console etc.

We sell the full Uniden range including the 013. Both the GME and Uniden are excellant products. We like the Uniden as it has 40 programmable frequencies that you can do yourself, where the GME has to be preprogrammed at place of purchase.

I haven't done it yet but I also am thinking of installing the GME face unit inside the front-most sunglass compartment in the standard overhead console. I don't know how difficult it would be to run the cables across to the passenger side inside the roof lining and down to the dash behind the plastic cover. You could also mount an external speaker in one of the rear sunglass holders and turf the covers.

If anyone else has done this please let us know how easy or difficult it is to hide the cables.

ChrisB et al,

I have mounted a full GME4400 where the front-most sunglasses compartment is normally in my TD100 overhead console. It took a while to work out the correct bracket but having done it and been happy with its appearance, I have now transferred the arrangement successfully between 2 such cars. The front sunnies door unit completely clips out leaving a large hole which fills quite nicely with the bulk of the radio. The unit protrudes down at a pleasing angle without infering with anything else including the 2 switchable downlights. I then carry the microphone in the rear-most compartment with the curly cable slightly dangling between the radio and the rear most sunnies door. I use the inbuilt speaker (very legible).

It is quite easy to take the coax and power cable from the centre console over to the drivers side front pillar through the roof lining using a long piece of draw wire. Once down under the dashboard, the cable and wire can be taken out into the engine compartment via one of the existing rubber pass-throughs without compromising the firewall in any way.

I am happy to take a photo and post it to anyone who is really keen to see the appearance of the finished product. This shows that with a little ingenuity, it is possible to use what the car already has without having to purchase an after-market overhead console unit or suffer having a radio hindering your legspace.

Regards, Anoldbuddy

With your installation method I assume you fold or cut the carpet back on the transmission tunnel and attach the unit to the tunnel side with self tappers . Is this correct?

Hi Lance,

I just peel the carpet back - wack the radio in and put carpet back - the carpet holds the unit in place. When i did mine originally i didnt use an ext speaker - the sound was ok - but not great when turning up the stereo or having the misses and kids yelling in the car........i then cable tied a speaker under the dash and its fine now. I have done a few since on units we have sold, however i find most of our customers have their own idea's on what / where they want to mount. I am alergic to drilling holes in my Interior.

I have looked at the sunglasses compartment to put the head in - but havent actually had a shot at it. My vehicle is a 100 Series TD Sahara so the sunglasses pocket is the only pocket i have up there (Sunroof) and the console is taken up with the fridge (not complaining - its great) - but it does limit storage badly.

Lanceo1, I have just fitted a GME 3400 to my 100 series with out drilling any holes remote head fits under ash tray with strong velcro tape. Wire passes through under ash tray tucked back under centre console to main unit bracket mounted under drivers seat with cable ties picked up constant power from empty connector presumably for electric seats under the seat. will send photo to your email
