Tragic Accident – Our sympathy to Bonz & Family

Submitted: Saturday, Apr 02, 2005 at 11:02

Al & Mrs Al (Vic)

Many of you are aware that on Thursday evening, Geoff [Bonz] & Marie Barby’s two eldest children – Kate and Daryl were killed in an horrific car accident, along with their dear friend Sarah Lopaschuk.

At times when words are the only things we seem to be able to offer they sometimes escape us, Geoff, Marie, Imogen and Paul we can only imagine the pain and heartbreak that you are all suffering at this awful time.

You have many friends here and we are all thinking of you.

On a personal level, both Al and I send you all our love and we want to reassure you that if there is anything you need you’re to just ask and we’ll be there.

It’s at times of great tragedy that people really pull together to support those we care about.

Alan, Lynda, Tegan & Callum Grierson

If anyone would like to contact Geoff personally, please email him at.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Barby:

My name is Rick Barr. I am the Project Manager for Metabolic Modulators Research Ltd. (Dr. Lopaschuk's company). On behalf of MMRL I would like to express our deepest sympathy in your loss of Kate and Darryl. Losing Sarah has impacted all of us very deeply. She worked at MMRL as a summer student during her summer (winter) break. She would come back from Australia to -30C and snow.

The University of Alberta is having a memorial service for Sarah on April 11. We would really appreciate if any of her friends or extended family could supply us with photos for a slide presentation on that day. Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

You can reach me at rickbarr@mmrl.ca

Thank You

Rick

My greatest joy in life is to get up in the morning and see my 19 yo son's keys on the bench and his car parked out the front, especially this morning.

I hope to be lucky enough for it to stay that way.

As for how the Barby family must be feeling, words fail me.

Our hearts go out to them.

All our little fridge, battery and tyre problems are insignificant compared with what you are going through. You had great kids. I remember thinking on the Border Track trip that if my kids turn out like yours I will be a happy man. You have a lot to be proud of, they were an asset to the community.
God bless their souls and give you strength.

I lay on the bed last night for a while in the dark and Heidi came in and she knew I felt despair.

Why do the feelings come to me the way they do?

I haven’t met these people before, they are strangers to me. It’s not really like me to care.

But I do. We all do. You can see the silence. The communal loss. We care because we are not strangers. We are all the same. We hurt so much when the time is upon us to hurt.

We know the hurt, we hate it, but it is here.

We cannot feel the intensity of it as you do, but we deeply feel for you.

I just wish I could change it. We all do. But we can’t.

I want you to know that I care and I am here for you and your family.

Geoff, Marie, Paul and Imogen,

You have the most heart felt condolences we can offer as one can hardly read the screen to type this. If we could have one wish it would e to brng back these young people, We feel privledged to have met Kate and Daryl, though not met Sarah. They were some of the most polite young people any one could wish to have known. The intelligence they had to deal with their studies was immense.

We know you will miss them more than we could ever know, but there is a whole community who will not have all they had to offer in our world. They are three beautiful people who had given so much joy, and had so much to look forward to.

The esteem in which the Barby family is held is shown by the messages here and the tributes in the Terang district and elsewhere. We hope that they will be of enduring comfort in the difficult days ahead.

We will be in touch on our return from overseas.

In the meantime we send our love to you all - you will continue to be in our thoughts.

I have only comunicated with you a few times via this forum, through this and reading your responses I have an image of a fun loving man with an imaganative and above all, good heart, and from reading the responses to this tragedy these traits are obviously a reflection on your family.

I can in no way even imagine what you are going through right now, I only hope to god that you and your family find the strength from each other to be able to cope with your loss.

Cheryl and myself wish we could do more than offer our sincerest condolences and may you find strength in the knowledge that we, as many others, especially those with children, are wishing to take some of your pain.

Thinking of you
Cheryl and Perry.

Do not think of me and weep,
I'm with you still, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the moonlight, See me glow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain,
When you awake in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not think of me and cry..

It constantly amazes me that an incident such as this, happening many miles away from me, to someone I really don't know, can bring me such sadness.

I am at work today and as I read this the faces of my kids came to mind and I wanted to reach out and hug them all. They really are precious.

To Bonz and family. I want to apologise for what has happened but that won't do it. I want to offer my help in any way I can, but wonder what I can do from so far away. What I really want to do is offer you something that might ease your pain. Once again I feel that that would be inapropriate. I can't share it and I pray that I will never experience it. All I can do is let you know that you are not alone, as you can see from this string.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

dearest Geoff and Marie, i guess its hard to say anything that hasnt already been expressed, i saw the news of the accident and thought how terrible for the families involved, but to then find out it was part of the 'extended family' we so proudly cherish here was heart wrenching.

Why does the worst happen to the best ???

Please find the strength to keep an eye out for each other, keep eating as hard as it is, to regain strong and dont forget that there is always help at hand and someone to talk to when needed.

As others have said, our door is open and a bed here if needed, i work a few shifts at the tulla airport, and live only a few minutes away, so if you need help getting to and from , or Sarah's family need a welcoming hand, please dont hesitate to ask.

As the father of my two lovely kids, I could not image my life without them and cannot fathom the pain you are going thru. Wombat replied:

G'day mate,

Just turned the 'puter on for the first time since Friday (mostly because I look at this damned monitor 12 hours a day, five days a week) and have been reading the heartfelt tributes from the ExplorOz forumites. I was going to attempt to pen something enlightening on Friday, but as Truckster said ". . . hard to know what to say". So I thought it wise to reflect over the weekend in an effort to compose something which might help to ease the heartache and emptiness which you and your family are undoubtedly enduring.

Well guess what?

There are no words that I, or anyone else for that matter, could bash into a keyboard which could possibly erase the hurt, the anger and that feeling of "being lost". Emotions that unfortunately most of us have experienced during our limited time on this earth. There is also nothing we can do to bring those beautiful children back for you. On hearing the sad news both Helen and my thoughts went back to that great day in the high country when we both agreed that Kate and Daryl were the type of kids that we would be proud for our own little treasure to grow up like. GIVE DON A BIG CUDDLE FOR US!!!!!!

The only meek words we can offer at this time are that our thoughts are with you and that we are sharing your pain in our own small ways. I was sitting in MacDonalds on Saturday night with my girls, on the way home from visiting my dear old dad in hospital when I picked the Herald Sun up to catch up with any news. Of course, in black and white in front of me there was further confirmation that tragedy in the newspaper doesn't always involve strangers. Half way through the eulogistic article the first of what were to be many teardrops hit the printed page. Unashamedly I cried for your loss. Pity the next poor bugger who picked up his complimentary 'paper for a read because it ended up being more than a little bit soggy!

Following is a copy for you and your family of Christina Rossetti 's words that my beautiful mother (she had time to say goodbye) demanded that we read for mourners at her funeral:

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

As hard as may seem at this time try to rejoice in the fact that these two wonderful children lived and the wonderful carefree life that they had, rather than mourning the fact that they are gone.

Paul, Helen and Kiralee

Bonz and family,

Haven't visited these pages for a week or so and had no idea. I saw the story on the internet in an east coast online paper and thought straight away that these sounded like 3 young people with the right stuff to make a difference, kids that parents could be very proud of.

All the things said in that story seem to be echoed by all the messages above from the people who were lucky enough to spend time with them.

It never ceases to amaze me how the internet has made the world so much smaller to groups such as those on this forum and how a tragedy such as this can touch so many who don't even "know" each other. Chances are we'll never meet but I feel great sorrow for your family and that of the young lady from overseas.

There are no words that could make this hurt any less or make you feel any better.

Condolences to both families.

Geoff & Marie may it be that you find the light in this darkness and the hope in this loss. Nothing will remove the pain or compensate for the loss, but I trust you will find the something in this tragedy that allows you to draw some comfort and peace.

Bonz,
Its all been said and i am sitting here and have tear-filled eyes, a lot of us here are parents and we know how much we love our children. The loss of them is one of our greatest fears.

Please accept my condolences during your time of tragedy and know that everyone here feels your pain.
