Wolfe Creek Crater

Can someone please tell me if their is still a camping area close to Wolfe Ck Crater? If so, what facilities does it have now? I am reading conflicting advice in several publications. We wish to overnight there after departing Halls Creek enroute to Alice.

As far as I know you can still camp there(from what ive read anyway) but when we were there in 2003,there wasnt much of a camp ground,only a small gravel area with a tin shelter,about 1/2 km from main car park to Wolfe creek crater.Didnt look real flash,especially for a tent.There was an abandoned homestead on the side of a creek bed about 5kms away that looked alright for camping,nice bit of shade but no water in creek.

Hi JW

We went through there last year. The camping area doesn't look very appealing, and the toilets were truly noisome! We drove further on and camped on the Sturt Creek. There are no facilities, but it is a much more attractive place. The Lonely Planet "Outback Australia" was our source of info for camping places and proved to be very accurate.

Have a great time, its a fascinating place to explore.

Do you mean at the crossing basically due east of the crater or the one near Billiluna to the south? Is a permit required?

Hi Jon,
The one near Billiluna, its about 40kms on from Wolfe Creek. I'm not sure whether a permit is required or not. We had permits for just about all aboriginal lands we passed through, just to be on the safe side. We got permits for WA very easily. You can apply online and get a reply by email on the same day. Have a look at the permit information on this site for the Tanami Track.
