pole configuration to cover tent

Submitted: Sunday, Apr 03, 2005 at 16:24

I currently use a spotrtiva domain plus dome tent (approx 5x3) with a small 3.6mx3.6m tarp out front for shelter. I wish to go for a bigger tarp probably (5.5mx7.2m) that covers tent and also provides shelter, problem is how do I configure poles. Is it best to use spreader bars through centre of tarp or on outer edges?

I have gone through this same exercise to cover a sportiva odyssey double dome. I made a 24 foot ridge pole out of 2 inch aluminium tube that disects into 4 pieces. The problem is how to support the middle of the ridge pole. To overcome this I made braces that come off the ridge pole at an angle to a pole on the edge of the tarp on each side. This brace fits into an adjustable bracket that is attached to these poles, all of which I had to make. I could bore you with more details but with a bit of thought I am sure you can work out a design for yourself based on this principle. Good luck.
