The way most 4wds have gone with electrically controlled fuel injection, let alone electrical controls on other things like traction control does raise issues for me.
Last October on the way through
Birdsville, I was talking to Theo at the shell. From what I remember he said about recoveries out of
the simpson desert, it used to be 50% were transmission/drive were the main reasons for breakdowns. In the last few years it is now electrical and mainly ECU engine managment systems breaking down.
Limp mode doesn't seem to work so well trying to cross dunes!
So maybe a major part of any decision in
buying a 4wd (new or 2nd hand) is the reliability of the management electrics, not just it's 4wd capability.
