Vic Camping show. Dissapointed.

Submitted: Sunday, May 01, 2005 at 14:09

Member - iMusty (VIC)

So, we went to the camping show and spent a straight 4 hours there.

They wanted us to wait 30 mins to get into the “invitation only” Winnebago and was asked to take our shoes off. We did not wait. Or take off shoes.

Buckets of chips cost $3.90 !! And a simple ham sandwich was $4.70 !!.
A sausage with a bit of bread was $2.70 BUT it did have onion.

You could have had a massage from a (special) Chinese guy and/or buy massage device from a (Genuine) Swedish bloke. For mums they could buy a plastic bucket that was being sold as an “amazing washing machine”. People did not like it when I yelled to the spruker it was just an ordinary bucket with printing on the side. Lol. It did have a “special spout” to empty it however, for those of us who don’t know how to remove a lid off a bucket.

We looked at all the gadgets that were on offer for those people who actually don’t want to go away at all. There was so much crapola.

There was a rock’n’roll dancing display, (which was quite good). There were Thousands of people and we were all being asked to pay $5.00 (not a typo) for an ice cream.

I’ve had my winge now and the show was pretty good if you can put up with all the bleep that they try to spoon feed you.

There was bugger all 12 Volt stuff and not a lot in the 4by ARB/Winch display BUT the guys there were friendly and not pushy at all.

Got to go now.

yes we too had a laugh at those buckets and couldn't believe that some people were buying them, it sounds like the Vic show isn't much different to the SA one. the things that we thought we were sure to find there (that usually is there) couldn't be seen. It's cheaper to go to Maccas first and take bottled water in with you.

And what about the portable clothes line? What's wrong with a rope or string or twine.

I don't think my camping kit contains a single one of these "gadgets" to "make camping easier". All the stuff I have is gathered from normal shops.

Rays sell plastic "camping plates" et al - so does Crazy Clints at about one tenth of the price, but they’re Melamine seconds – just as good. I did once buy one of these "toast 4 slices of bread at the same time" things from Big W - it was crap. So I bent it around a bit and it now makes an excellent toaster for one slice of bread :)

I always carry a big roll of nylon string (about 2mm dia.) from the $2 shop it has all sorts of uses around camp.

I stopped going to camping / caravan /4WD shows quite a while ago - apart from anything else I object to being charged entry money so that people can try and sell me things I don't want.

Funny thing is, I wonder what all the little buggers in China were thinking when they were making them....

"Ah, so.... we make these and sell to Aussies down under eh?"

They were more than likely reject bird driers, like you push the empty bird carcass on them, to dry them out over hot coals, then stuff them, with rats & cats.

I too threw mine out............

perhaps it sound better to fellow campers if you have a propper bucket for the job than just a plain old bucket from the local servo or even a bakery (if you need one with a lid) for under $3. I too have managed with a plain old bit of rope tide between the trees or guy ropes, I did look at those clothes lines (which were EVERY were) and thought that you would be lucky to fit a t shirt on the largest part of the line.

I've actually got one of those bucket style washing contraptions with the writing on the side. And guess what, camping with 2 kids under 5 it has being great. The agitator that you pump up and down and twist through the lid makes washing the kids clothes a breeze - and gets them clean too. Never again would I go back to hand washing in any other bucket.

Geez, you guys are quick to bag something. Maybe someone would like to have a bucket wash off against me with their home made jobbie :) I would kick some serious dirty washing butt LOL

Finally, why cat-call the spruker - he's just trying to sell a product - why make his life more difficult than it already is. Bloody hell, it's just his business - if you don't like his product then don't buy it! Why do you need to try and ridicule him or turn others off the product.

As for the price of food - seems pretty standard to me.

Natalie (my wife) actually insisted we get one after camping with the kids and seeing how easily the family camped next to us washed their clothes with one. I reckon that bucket, along with the fridge and the Twine would be items that Natalie would insist be immediately replaced if they busted. Natalie also uses it at home if she wants to soak and wash bibs and baby wash cloths.

Everyone laughs at it until they come and have a look properly, then next thing you here, Karen can I hang our wet towels on your clothes line. In the end every one else has got their gear on it, and I cant get our gear on it. We have got the large size and there is 20 meters of hanging space on it.
Im with you Moggs, why give the guy curry over his product, if you dont like it, well walk away. He might think what you sell in your business is shiiit to, and I'm sure you wouldnt appreciate it if he stood out the front all day yelling bad things about your products. But that is the mentallity of some people on here. Nothing better to do but whinge if it dosnt please some people on here, lets bag them. If you don't like going to shows, dont go! Half the time they are more expensive than in a normal shop anyway, but the only difference is you don't have brain dead people yelling out the front, "his product is shiiit, don't buy it"

Some people on here need to take a look at themselves. It must be a lonley in their own little perfect world.

No, the spruker did not tell me to blow it out my ears and/or arse either.

In fact he did not talk directly to me at all. He was polite and loving. A real genlteman. All con men are.

Are we supposed to think we are lucky he was there showing us his new invention?

Do you ??

As I stated earlier (hours earlier), it might BE good for nappies.

But why not use a bucket?

AND STILL NO-ONE HAS ANSWERED ME. !!!

I spend hours and hours just thinking and improving my camping experience and I would prefer to encourage others to do the same, NOT just go out and buy somehting some spruker says is good.

Maybe if ANYONE on this site had of mentioned this amazing machine BEFORE the spruker killed the idea for me, it would of got a more interested listener.

It's not my fault the marketing method of this product seems slippery and snake oil like. "Show special offer" & "urgent", "urgent", "urgent"

But wait there's more...

I did say that I enjoyed the dancing and if you can get past most of the crapola it was OKish.

Moggs agree they are quite an ingenious invention. ( No I don't own one)

If people bother to watch and understand what the salesman is actually selling they may discover and learn a thing or two in life.

It's a buyers market nobody forces you to either go to the show or to buy anything when you are there.
If you just want to complain about what you did, saw or what happened to you, Then why did you go in the first place?
But as Karen says some people are just plain brain dead and can't walk away if they aren't interested and let the bloke get on with his job.
In my view it's pretty obnoxious to bag the bloke like that.

Maybe that's why Mike Harding has such a good sense about Musty, (Peas in the Pod so to speak)

I was looking forward to seeing the "bucket" washing machine when the next show comes our way but at $45.00 I back stepped a bit.

Anything that makes light work of boring household chores sounds good to me.

Well it was the Caravan and Camping show, more caravan than anything.

There were some good prices on things, depends what you are looking for. It is a good place to great idea, see what and how people manufacture their idea, then go home and modify their idea and make something to suit your needs.

As for the washing maching bucket, it has to beat the scrubbing clothes in just a plain bucket for long trips. I wouldn't pay for it, but as i said earlier, see their ideas and then make your own.
