Wingan Inlet Road Conditions

Submitted: Monday, May 02, 2005 at 16:29

Jodi

Hey there,

I'm hoping somebody can provide me with some information. We were planning on heading down to Wingan Inlet next week (May 9th) and camping for a few days. Normally we head of in the 4WD however now we cannot take it after some mechanical problems and we are left with a 2WD (which is a bugger considering we were planning a 10 day trip that has now been severely cut down). We have not been to Wingan before so are unfamiliar with the road conditions. Is the road in to Wingan passable with a 2WD or should we head elsewhere?

Camped there last weekend - still dirt but the surface is not too different to that of the Princes Highway. Easily passible in 2WD - reckon a 1960s mini minor could do travel this road quite easily.

Thanks Pete. Looks like we'll head out there and see how we go. How was the fishing?

Hi Jodi
We didn't get round to the fishing - we were actually camped there to plan our trip to the Flinders Ranges in September - good central place and quiet for those doing this trip who are not Canberra-based. That said, there was plenty of bird and surface activity just beyond the shore break. Look like tailor/salmon or tuna cutting up the bait fish .....and plenty of them too.
Cheers

Iwas there a month or so ago in a 2wd and whilst its a good road in the dry, it is very steep for the last 2 k and could be a challenge if it got really wet and the road started to get cut up.

Thanks for the info. We have just purchased another 4WD. 99 Hilux, low km's. Will see if it is ready to go on time. Otherwise will have to take it as it comes. We've got a few other fav spots that we know we can get the 2WD into, just keen to be somewhere we haven't been while we have the time off work.

Did you fish?
