For what its worth, I would be doing my homework for now and when the day comes that it shows signs of dying, then you would be organised for a decision. Seems to me some people (not refering to you here) panic for no reason.
My first GQ 4.2 Deisel did over 600,000 kms and was still going strong. But ...I paniced and eventually sold it to someone who is still enjoying it as much as i was. Sorry to see it go actually.

Problem you will have is with the 2.8, your running a different gearbox to the 4.2. SO if you was considering tossing in a 4.2, then there would be heaps more work involved and in my opinion, just not worth it. I asked the question a few weeks ago in relation to the Chev 6.5 ltr V8 turbo Diesel and to have one supplied and fitted your looking at approx 16,000 bucks.
My other option before i sold the first GQ was pricing a brand bew in the crate 4.2 engine from Nissan, at a cost of 11,000 bucks for that.
Someone is making a killing out there and it sure as hell aint US.

How many kms does yours have?

Not being in a hurry is good for you. Start putting some dollars aside and keep an eye on the auctions and papers for a rolled or smashed 4.2

You will need to upgrade the gearbox, transfer, radiator, possibly the diffs, plus a few other bits and bobs, so being able to look around with no time limits will make it much easier. You can also talk to lots of people and get ideas/input about the best way to go about it.

The GQ is such a good base to work from, almost anything is possible.

veh has just hit the 200,000km mark. I know that for a diesel this is not much, but it is a small diesel. How many km's would I expect to get out of this engine?
Take into account that I do my regular oil changes, filters etc every 5000km and I do not tow. Also does not do much city driving. Like to keep it just for trips away (highway driving).

there is a 2.8 gu getting around kal with a 6.5. When I bailed HER up apparantly it cost 16k all up including gearbox - everything

I nearly bought a GQ with a dead 2.8td, priced out all the options for converting to a td42. All up should have cost between 6-7k allowing for 4k for engine & gear box which was readily available.

At the time I could have bought a front cut with all the above on for $3k but got cold feet in the end.

The other option of course is to sell the 2.8 truck and hjust buy a 4.2 complete.

this will finish up being an expensive exercise!! I guess if I have 200,000 left in the engine I might as well run it into the ground as it is doing the job fine. The economy on big trips is fantastic compared to my mate driving the bigger petrol landcruiser though. I guess by the time the engine has died we would have done alot of trips and got our money's worth out of the veh. I guess after 200,000 kms of bush work the body won't be as good as it is today either!
