Mine is a 75 series (1997) 1HZ and comes in at 3 & 1/2 Ton fully Loaded.

Has a DTS/MTQ after market turbo and depending on the conditions at the time such as

Weather - Head wind
Terrain - Hills
Temperature - Cool/hot
Traffic - Rampant right foot activity for passing.
Weight - self explanatory
Speed - Self explanatory

It will be between 12.5L - 15.5L per 100kms.

City driving, well all of the above factors, plus stop start at lights, how it is driven etc etc. ensures that it is a around the 15.5 - 16.5L mark and sometimes a bit more depending on how I treat it.

Except for the water tank, it is always fully loaded and ready to go.

I've got a 79 series Turbo diesel tray back and get consistently 13.5ltrs/100k's around the city but uses sightly more on the highway. I think it might have something to do with aerodynamics or the low gearing that seems to have reving quite high to hold 110klms even in top.

Get around 14 - 15L/100 km out of a 79 series factory turbo ute @ 100-110 clicks. Economy is better than n/a 79 series, unless you really hunt them along. Imagine troopy would be similar, or slightly less, with extra weight.

Reckon the turbo tojo's are best Landcruiser they've ever made, except formaybe an 80 series turbo.

I have direct experience with both.

I own a 2001 78 series non-turbo Troopy (weighs about 3t all the time). When I'm careful I get about 13.5L/100kms around town, between 12 and 13 on the open road - sometimes a little better. In a strong head wind it drops off - and loaded up in soft sand I have returned over 20L/100kms. :-(

We have Turbo Diesel Troopies at work (02 build) - they get slightly worse fuel consumption than my non-turbo truck in all usages. IMHO - this is mainly because they have plenty more get up and go - so you tend to use it.

I reckon, if a factory turbo troopy was driven to accelerate and travel at the exact same speeds a non-turbo usually manages - the fuel consumption would be comparatively slightly less in the turbo version.

However, I don't know a driver alive who would drive a turbo version as slowly as a non-turbo, so the reality is fuel consumption from a trubo will be higher - but the driving pleasure is worth it (i wish mine was a factory turbo).
