Yep. Go to Weipa and let the kids swim in the caravan park pool, and take a mine tour. While there do some fishing from the jetty.

Ian, been there done that when my kids weren't all grown up and moved away Even today they'd jump at the chance to go again. My 30yo daughter still refers to Cape Tribulation as "The Trib" She was 10 when she was there:) Try and get to Cooktown if you can, and fish the wharf there also. And dont forget to throw a handline in for yourselves.
Try and involve the kids in the journey. Setting up camp etc. Happy adults also help make happy kids...mostly. Take your sense of humour, and use it as often as possible. Ask them if they want to swap seats occasionally. Ask them their ideas on what they'd like to see etc. Basically involve them in a non compulsary way.
Swim at the falls, but keep the kids away from the sea and other watery places.
They'll have a great time that they'll remember all their lives.

Ian - I took a group from Canberra to Cape York in July last year. I still have the planning doc and a truck load of touristy info. If you post and email address I will send you the docs. I also have a raft of oziexplorer waypoint and track files that might prove useful if you have this piece of kit and a GPS.
Cheers
Pete

Hi Pete,
I would love the email as well, we are looking at going late October, so I guess I will be waving to everyone else heading back by then.
We would love to hear back from anyone going around that time as we are travelling alone so far and it would be great to pair up with others.

I recommend Ron and Viv Moon's book 'Cape York, An Adventurer's Guide'. Latest edition is dated 10th March 2005. Pretty readily available, and also from EO shop I think. I think it a TVan they have in tow in the picture on the cover.

We enjoyed the old telegraph line.
Most small creeks, but not all creeks are reasonably croc safe, but check.
Have seen a few bits of a pig left in some creeks up on the cape.

Good chance to have a splash while you check out the crossing.
Of course being the biggest kid, I sometimes got the wettest :-).
Try not to do too many miles in one day.

Have a good trip.

Ian - just emailed a heap of info to you. Sorry if the email takes a bit to download but I also put a couple of pics of Gunshot in for you to drool over. This is one creek I wouldn't try with a trailer on behind though - ditto for Cannibal and Canal if they are in the same state as when we were there last year. By the way you will have to change the symbols in oziexplorer as they are set up for my GARMIN GPS76.
Enjoy the trip.

Hi Pete.

Can I join the growing list of "me too" people and ask for a copy of your Cape info? I'm in the tentative planning stages of a June 2006 trip up there. I managed to get a couple of weeks up there in 2001, but we were too rushed to go exploring, so any info you have will be helpful. Please email to rhyswaring at yahoo dot com dot au...

Thanks a lot,
T-Bone.

Pete, I wasn't going to ask, but can't help myself, since so many others have. I'm heading up to the Cape in September. Have Ron and Viv Moon's book and the Hema map, but your personal experience is probably just as valuable a resource. Thanks for making it available for so many of us.

The Cape sure is going to be crowded!
