Learnt the hard way

well I learnt the hard way didn't I, i purchased a "heavy Duty 12V compressor" on ebay last month for $140 with postage. It took a while to arrive, no worries i can accept that.

Went for a drive where i did not need the compressor but packed it away incase. We took a quick run out to windjana gorge and back home.
I thought i better give this new pump a try out and when i open up the bag I found that the base plate had fallen off the bottom of the pump as all the rubber mounting grommets have sheared away. Pump still worked no problems.

I emailed the Auctionbrokers company i purchased it off and was informed it only had a 14day warranty period within which they would pay for the postage back to them, so much for a 12 month warranty that is written on the box.

Anyway beware of this if your buying on ebay, The 14 day warranty was no help to me as it took them 12 days to get it shipped to me = only 2 days of warranty.

I get a better warranty support on a $39 drill from the local hardware store.

Has anyone else who bought these chinese pumps and have the base plate come away, or had other problems with them?

yeah.... got to be careful.... bought some cheap spotties which i had intended to wire to the rear for better lighting whilst reversing. The spotties came but the casing of both the spotties were cracked... the online store refused to accept responsibility.

I've never bought a compressor off ebay but I did buy two from supercheap, I now have a blue tounge IV...

Chinese crap is a little hit and miss. I have bought some really good chinese crap off ebay and I have got some shockers.

It all depends on what 2c part they decide to remove at manufacture, sometimes they get away with it, sometimes it's detremental to reliability/ performance. That's why when I here people say "it's all made in the same factory anyway" I laugh.

Maybe it is made in the same factory, but how much did the buyer screw the manufactor on the price? What did they decide to cheapen up or remove to make it worth their while to produce it for that price?

We used to get this all the time, we had many different grades to chose from when importing computer equiptment and power supplies, they all look the same though.... Sometimes the power supply with half the rectifier missing worked fine, sometimes they wouldn't, sometimes they'd work fine till there was a small power spike then blew themselves to peices... Somtimes they take everything else out with them!

But in saying all this, I bought a 5.1 Digital 100w per channel amp off ebay for my home entertainment system, I checked things like the weight of the product before ordering, knowing full well that a 5kg 500w amp is going to be crap, this one was 16kg so I figured unless they filled it with bricks it had a good chance of being half decent. It is, it's a great performer. But you never know what your going to get...

The pump is till working at the moment but I wish i had bought it from a local store now as I would have demanded the cash back. I just have to figure out how to replace all the rubber feet/grommets that have failed.

I was looking at buying a cordless drill on ebay either dewalt or makita but i think i will buy it at a local hardware store for the peace of mind.

I bought a 20.4V cordless Ozito drill peice of crap from bunnings when my Firestorm finally kicked the bucket, I needed a drill and didn't have much cash. It still goes, amazingly, I mainly use it for polishing the 4by. I use it till it starts smoking out the vents then have a rest (cos my arms a tired anyway) then blow it out with the air compressor to cool it down and go again for another 15 minutes! LOL
It keeps fighting on though. But it is crap.

I bought an Ozito 20V hammer drill, simply because sometimes I have to come back to a job to fit some pipe covers after the job is complete.... 4 X 5mm holes!... having a "cheap" hammer drill means I can save time running the ext lead out for the Hitachi.... heck the people don't even have to be home!

but I did try one of tose Heavy Duty 12V truck compressors.... got about 6 air ups outta it before it disappeared in a cloud of smoke! I now own an OX.... no probs at all!!!!

I don't use a compressor very much. But when I need one. I REALLY need one, if you know what I mean.
Now I'm as povo and cheap as the next guy. But I've been in too many situations where I needed to take tyre pressure down and couldn't due to lack of a decent compressor.
I bought a cheap one years ago and it took one look at my tyres and died on the spot (although I stood around for 40 mts thinking gee its slow:)
If my memory serves me right , they used to be around 5-600+ . So when they came down to 300 I thought thats it, I'm gonna get one of those babies.
A Big Red was duly purchased.
If Viagra works as quickly and well as my compressor ...well what more can I say? :))
Now I can air up and down with confidence, and sneer at the cheap ones.
4WD tyres, the sit on tyres, car tyres, trialling bead breakers, the list goes on.
Compressor wise, I'm a very happy camper.

G,day Nick, i have the same compressor as you, from the same seller, except you got yours a lot cheaper, anyway, mine did the same as yours, so im just going to cut some small rubber washers and bolt the compressor back onto the plate, apart from that, they are great compressors for what you pay.

Cheers Paul..
