Some Engel performance figures!

Hi All,

This is no scientificaly controlled experiment with recorded facts & figures with amp hours and internal temps and all that other stuff alot of you techos understand, but maybe of some interest anyway.

I parked the Gu wagon at home on friday morning 11am with the engel in the back containing about 12-14 cans with the second battery (obviously the one that runs the fridge) reading 13.2v.

Then flew to Merimbula for the weekend for a supprise 70th birthday got back this arvo at 4.00pm and the second battery is reading 12.4v

Thats 99 hours for the loss of .8 of a volt.

Now obviously the fridge was never opened in that time and I have know idea what the weather was like down here over the weekend, the car was outside in the drive with about 40% of the day shaded by a tree.

Pretty friendly conditions I know but pretty good amp usage I would of thought.

Oh it's a 40litre 40th anny edition in a travelbag

The other day I opened the empty Waeco up and the internal temp was 21C. Applied power, put it on freeze and stood talking to bro. It went down 10 degrees while we were gas bagging, maybe 10 or 15 mts. Must say I was surprised that the digi multimeter continued to show such a quick decline.

Do you know if the fridge motor was running when those voltages were taken? Or was the battery resting? 13.2V must have meant the battery was still dropping down to it's rest voltage? Was that measured just as you turned the engine off?

mmmm, not sure on the fridge motor running as I just peek in the window to see my voltage reading, but the 13.2v was shortly after switching the vehicle off as you say.

When I peaked in at the 12.4 reading thisarvo I assumed the fridge wasn't running because it reguarly drops to 11.9 when running.

Browney there wasn't a point. I was merely reporting an observation on fridge operation. I would of started a new thread, but it seemed a waste so I just waded in.

(1) what brand/type/size battery do you use

(2) how long was it since you stopped the vehicle that you saw the 13.2v

(3) the fridge was not running when you saw the 12.4v

(4) What is the battery cut-out figure of the fridge, did the fridge trip the cut-out

(5) what was the temp of the fridge when you returned

99 hours (~four days) for .8 of a volt is..... ‘unusual’

It's one of those fridges which puts power back into the battery when it's resting. I know of cars which make fuel when they're resting too.

2, Not exactly sure, didn't plan to do the "test" about 10 mins I reckon

4,Don't know what the cut out figure is,whatever is "standard" on a 40 litre 40th anny engel

5, The fridge was reading 4.0' c (fridge "turns on" at about 4.5c and hovers between 2'c-4.5'c)

6,My thoughts also, hence the post, I expected the cut out to be in efect and the temp two be way up on my return, but was fair dinkum reading 12.4 and 4'c also I don't think the fridge had reached cut out

I luv a few bourbons but had none last nite, so I’m sure I’m correct when I say, I posted I was going to contact Exide today to confirm an N70 series battery is not a DC battery but a HD Starter battery.
I believe about a dozen posts are "missing" today including the affirmative answer.
