Certainly the summer hols are the busiest time and there will be plenty of campers at this popular spot. However, it is a big joint so you should be able to find a spot on the river somewhere. Most camps don't stay for more than 3 or four days anyhow.

It will be busy over Xmas, with many people just stopping for a few nights, or just stopping for lunch. The march flies will be out, and the mozzies are big, and this year the water will be low, if not only in pools (not running). A trip over the next valley into Pioneer Racecourse or Talbotville (this will also be busy) is well worth it for a few nights.
It is a nice area, but a lot better when green.
There are also a few ways to travel in, via Mt Buller, Licola, Buckland, Buffalo or Dargo High Plains, the easiest being via Buffalo Creek.
Have a nice time, and take the insect repellant.

Andrew Wonangatta will be busy in January but it is a large area so you will find somewhere to camp but firewood will be your biggest hassle. You could just stop and look at the cemetry and homestead site and head down river or go over into the Humpfry River as there are plenty of secluded sites there. Keep an ear to the news broadcasts on the radio in case of total fire ban days as I would say the DNRE would be heavy on anyone caught out. Regd"s Darryn

The dunny budgies will drive you CRAZY, and they are the size of B-52's... And its nowhere near March yet!

Jan long weekend last year, we were bugged out one night at Blacksnake Creek, decent distance out of Dargo, a swarm of something came thru and we basically thru the tents and the lot in the car still setup! Drove back to Dargo and got a place there for the night... NOT HAPPY JAN!

The whole area that part of the country is EXCELLENT, but bugs are the biggest let down, also the fact that early Jan, kids are on holidays, and so are parents, trying to get aaway with it too.

Jan Long weekend is also Chockablock everywhere... as your trying to do, and as someone else said, pick another weekend a maybe weekend before long weekend!

Andrew, we are planning to there at the same time next year. I had expected that it would be busy considering holidays etc. We will be looking for the more secluded campsites, if they can be found at that time. Looks like it will be VERY dry and probably a total fire ban. We will be leaving from Sydney 27.12.02. Might see ya there!! Phil
