Can anyone tell me what they think a second hand GME fibreglass uhf antenna in reasonable condition should be worth, I can't remember the model number but its the biggest one they do, about six feet high and mounted to the spring base with four grub screws.

Bozo, Similar aerials we buy are about $120 new, though cost varies with make or dealer. have paid $140 for the 4 foot version. Reckon yours would be worth $50 - 70. See ya... Try Mobile One website, they used to have prices marked.

Maybe Nigel could comment on this also......I have been making some home brew UHF antennas for my own use out of stainless wire and $5 PL connectors. I make them in 1/4....1/2 and full wave. Seem to work fine....I use the GME modular at times too. With the mid channel wavelength being 628mm, can't quite figure why the fibreglass one mentioned would be 6' long.
Can understand that HF CB antennas are more exacting in the build, but the home brew UHF sees to be a real proposition for most tinkerers. I have a share page
here. Any comment welcome.dp

Darian, read your page, and found it interesting. We had s/steel aerials here some years ago, when the choice wasn't as great as it is now. They were good, giving pleasing results over long distances, but they don't last. They fatigue and break off just above the mount - not handy if youre a long way from the dealer. As for movement of vehicle affecting the transmission, if the radio/aerial unit are running efficiently, then movement would have to be extreme before the signal was degraded. Just my thoughts, as we run 6 mobiles here on everything from hilux to Cat grader, to repeater, up to 60 kms away.
There were some uhf aerial designs in one of the old electronic magazines once, don't remember which one. Catch you later....
