Vic Speed Camera farce

I see tonight's news shows the road toll in Victoria is 16 higher than for the same time last year.

This shows what a mockery the speed camera system is and shows it to be nothing more than an illegitimate tax NOT a genuine means to making our roads safer or to reduce the road toll.

Where has all the money made, gone to. As it is worth well over $100,000,000 a year to the state, isn’t it time this money was used to start an education program for our children or to employ more highway patrols or anything that WILL genuinely reduce the carnage.

Just my bitch for the day.

I'm no fan of the camera fraternity but the counter argument to yours would be "Imagine how much higher it would be without them"

There is no win either way I guess.

Hi John, the problem is that there is no evidence to prove that they are a deterrent.

NSW has them everywhere and there is no change in there toll either, Qld does not have them and yet there’s is the same as well.

My point is that as they are making so much money from these cameras, why are they not using the money to do more to reduce the toll.

How on earth does receiving a find for speeding, 2 weeks after the event, slow you down on the day it happened.

Nothing is more affective than sitting beside the road with a marked or unmarked police car behind you and seeing the smiles on all the passing motorists.

Here’s an interesting story from Canada. After first installing speed cameras, a study was carried out and found that people, who were less likely to speed in the first place, were now involved in more accidents than before the cameras were installed.

The finding of the study produced evidence that there had in some cases been an increase in minor accidents because people were spending so much time looking at there speedos.

The conclusion, the Canadian government has now removed the speed cameras.

Could you imagine that sort of honesty from any of our governments.

Cheers.

You're fighting a loosing battle drivesafe.

Australians are so acquiescent to their governments I am astonished we have an international reputation for being free thinkers and rule breakers. We are puppets to our governments. And what’s worse: we’re proud of it! Watch the responses.

Drivesafe,

Just to claify something. Queensland does have speed cameras and has had them for some time and all the usual pros and cons argumenmts exist here as well.

Cheers

I am glad that the cameras are on the roads. The revenue gained, in Queensland anyway, goes to Treasury consolidated revenue and is used to pay for other services.

As the coppers say - it is a voluntary contribution, it is up to you whether you want to contribute or not.

Motor vehicle crashes and the road are going to happen no matter what because we are human and we do human things.

I would like to see permanent speed cameras outside all schools in Brisbane - just to get the local parents to slow down a bit. I would lie to see more speed cameras on the beaches around the Sunshine and Fraser Coasts so that those selfish speeders may learn something about sharing beach spaces with others and that there are people on the beach besides themselves.

The above two gripes of mine are simple stuff - not much thought required.

Just my rant

I too would love to see more outside schools Seanny. I have seen people booked and still speeding. If they see a police car they do slow down but they cars aren't there every day. There are 8 schools and 10 (wo)manned crossings in this small town.

They should be out on the open road where accidents have occurred due to speed, not sneakily hiding where they have extended the 70 or 80 zone to way out of town, where the accident risk is very low. That's how they seem to work in WA - revenue raisers. A few police cars driving along the highway makes everyone slow down - speed cameras just make drivers angry. That's my rant, even though i haven't ever got a speeding ticket. Motherhen

Yep, I can tell you that when you drive for a living and your family is dependant on you having your drivers lisence you spend more time looking at the side of the road and your speedo than you do at where the hell your going!
And don't anyone give me this "well just don't speed" bullbleepe. I just got flashed by a camera the other week driving for work. Going down hill with no other cars around me on a straight dual lane major road with my foot OFF THE ACELERATOR in a manual Toyota ECHO. It was hidden in the bushes and I saw it flash. I glanced at the speedo and it had crept up to 88 in an 80 zone. The Speedois a BIG LED DISPLAY so I'm not guessing my speed here, if anyone has seen the dash of an echo they'll no what I'm talking about.
What a crock ofbleepe.
So they can go to hell. I don't see them fixing the death trap roads we have here, just look at the middle swan bridge, the most embarassing road in Perth. And there are plenty more out there. I don't see the government spending money on driver training. They just want you to pay for it! WELL WE ALREADY DO WITH THESE PATHETIC CAMERAS!
It's a crock. It does NOT save lives, it's just makes the pollies super account fatter.

Vic does seem to be a bit tough. 3 weeks after entering for the first time, I received a letter in the mail saying I hadn't payed the Toll. Funn how I didn't even go through a toll booth. I didn't see the signs either as I was too busy trying to go the right way.

Then, a week after that I got done for 5k over the limit (that's 1k over the 4k they allow for speedo mistake).

What a joke! Talk about revenue raising!

I am contesting both, and will not be paying...period.

Hi Brian B, true Qld has got speed cameras and has had them for about 8 years, I know, cause I got my picture taken two weeks after they were introduced.

The difference is that Beattie to date has made it quite clear that he will not introduce fixed speed cameras and this is the type that both Vic and NSW make all there money from.

The type that Qld uses ( and are in use in NSW and Vic ) are the manned type and can actually be set up in black spots whereas the fixed type are almost always put in areas where people speed but there has never had an accident.

To prove the point. Henry Lawson Drive, is Sydney’s south west, prior to the tallowy opening, had sections of road with 100 kph sections.

As soon as the tallowy opened, the speed was reduced to 60 kph and a camera installed. Now they were having so many accidents on this section of road that the camera was a necessity NOT.

There were very very few accidents on this road and the only reason the speed was lowered was to force people on to the PRIVATELY owned tallowy.

This camera is now one of the top three money making cameras in the state.

I for one like the ordinary manned speed traps because you never know where they are, whereas the fixed cameras are know especially by the very people that need to be court.

As has been stated a number of times above, it’s police presents that reduces speed and accidents NOT fixed speed cameras.

As I posted earlier and with a bit of clarification, I thing these FIXED speed cameras are nothing more that an immoral form of tax.
Cheers

Put in black spots my ass hole.
I drive through over 4 black spots on the way to work each day and there are never cameras there. They are always around the corner of the highway heading into the sun where the speed limit is 80km/hr instead of 90km/hr like the entire rest of the highway. They are bullbleepe.
BTW Black spots are a fedral issue, not state. The states couldn't give a rats ass about them. They are just thinking of $$$.

Oh yeah and I love the WA Govt. "It is not our policy to hide speed cameras, why do you think we have fluro signs to let you know where they are". ROTFALMAO!
These "signs" are always 150m after the camera turned sideways (facing paralell to the road) and in front of a big bush. I have actually pulled over and moved a sign out into a visable spot once, it makes me angry that there whole goal is to get a quotta for the spot and not save lives.

Drivesafe,

Queensland at this time only use moveable cameras but that is going to change in the near future with the government looking at the introduction of fixed cameras as well.

One of the biggest issues which bleep es off QLD drivers is that at times the cameras are sited in areas with no accident history etc. I have seen them in 70klm per hour zones with the vehicle so hidden in the bush it is unbelievable.

I don't have a problem if they are sited in spots with bad traffic history but where they are now turning up is over the top. Perhaps state governments should put some of the money they are making back into increasing police numbers and getting more of them out on the road to deal with crimes etc.

Cheers

Years ago, in the days before cameras, I used to travel regularly from Brisbane to Sydney and/or Melbourne for work. When you crossed the QLD border everyone slowed down to 100Kph cause the roads were crawling with cops in both marked and unmarked cars. You didn't dare speed.
Nowadays it's the opposite. Cross the QLD border and LETS GO!! If you sit on 100kph you're the slowest car on the road.
The powers that be have taken to using speed cameras instead of real coppers in cars. These cameras have very little deterrent effect. Why don't they use some of the money from cameras to employ more coppers to patrol the roads? I believe this would be a far better solution than the current revenue stream....
People slow down and behave when they see a copper. Fact!
People just get agro when they see a speed camera.....

100% agree if you see a cop you slow down.
If you get flashed by a camera you get angry and because you are angry about it you are probably more likely to speed or have a accident, or you spot the camera slow down go past it then speed up agene.

Apparently in WA if they are caching a lot of speeders the tolerance goes up, but if it’s been a quiet month then they will book you for doing less over the limit.

So if everybody is doing the right thing and slowing down they will crake down harder so you can’t win. The cop’s just used to give a 10% leniency across the bord on speed!.

The problem with cars in a school zone is now everybody drops their kid’s off and pikes them up. I remember when I was a kid (and I am not that old) we would ride or walk to school every morning and if we couldn’t because of rain or what ever we would be pis*ed off about it. Now if they are really young children or live far from the school then no problem.
Has Australia really become so dangerous that a group of kid’s can’t walk to and from school?
