Touring Tassy

We are considering touring Tassy for approx 1 month in 2003. We will be touring in an 80 series, we would like to visit the remote areas, as well as other areas, has any one done a similar trip and have an itinerary we could have a look at. For accommodation we plan to camp and also stay in on site cabins.

A month in Tasmania is great. Best times are autumn and spring or summer. North West behind Smithton is magic country, up through to Milk Shake Hills Reserve etc. There are some small short walks on the way and these are a *must do*. The one is called the Enchanted Forest, and it is really like walking into a fairy tale store book. Never seen anything else like it as it is mainly horizontal scrub.

Worst trip in Tasmania is the Western Explorer Road. Surface is bloody awful, boring, and 80km of it. Just low grassy plains and no, you cannot get down to the coast.

Also known as 'road to nowhere'. I got onto it thinking it would be a quick way of getting down to Strahan from Smithton. No way. Missed the ferry. Still some lovely desolate country, maybe more outback than some inland places. Cheers Royce

Forgot to add, whatever time of year you go to Tasmania, take some warm winter clothing with you, in addition to your normal clothing.

Hi... I've toured Tassie 14 times now with my travelling science show for schools. I reckon I have travelled every road there is. I bet no Tassie resident has! I can recommend WINTER as a great time to tour Tas. I might even be better than Spring [more wind and rain]. I have never made it in Summer [no school]. There are waterfalls galore. I live in Gippsland..... very similar. Very neat farms. Lots of wood used. Check out the woodpiles! I think some Taswegians have a bit of a fetish there!. It is almost home now. I spend nearly a couple of months there some years. Lovely all over. The itenerary you should follow is: Buy a map..... one or two pages is enough. Go down almost every road... a couple of loops is enough to get to the start of each. Most roads are sealed..... even little suckers! Some are even sealed up past the gutters onto the side of cuttings. The unsealed roads seem to be pretty good too. There are a few good 4wd tracks around, but in one month you might as well check out stuff you can see from the 2wd roads, with a bit of a poke in off road whenever it takes your fancy. By yourself down little 4wd tracks is not good when stuck. Have great time!
Cheers Royce
PS Sandy Bay caravan park is being shut down in April. Get there quick. It's nice. The sun alway hits it in the mornings as your look across the harbour. Wrest Point Casino is in the foreground and the bridge in the distance. I'll miss it! Hooroo

the better half and myself went over there in january this year. we only went for 10 days and it was not long enough. when we got of the boat we went to cradle mountain. then onto stanley. it has a great caravan park. from their down the western explorer to zeehan. at the start of the explorer there`s a fishing village called arthur river we would have liked to stay there a night or two if we had the time. i could go on for ages . one of the best books to buy for down there is the latest lonley planet guide for tasmania. if you would like to ask questions just email me and would be glad to help.
