Time to rub it in.

Well as I have just spent the last 6 months here in Broome in one of the driest and hottest wet seasons we have ever had now is the time of year that reminds me why we live here. Its also the time when we can enjoy our fantastic dry season weather and I can rub it in a little to all you people stuck down South where its cold and wet.
Anyway I am in the process of setting up to take the family away for the long weekend this weekend. I am taking Friday off work as well to make it worthwhile and we are headed to one of those secret local spots along the Dampier Peninsular road to Cape leveque. Its a spot on the coast and I know the land owner so he has give us permission to camp there.
Picture fresh oysters the size of dinner plates scraped off the rocks and grilled with some bacon and worcestershire, picture huge blue bone, mangrove jacks or for some fun large trevs and queenies that you can practically see take your bait.
Picture crystal clear water for the kids to swim in with pure white sand. Picture 2 or 3 familys sitting around a roaring campfire enjoying a beer or wine.

It doesnt get much better than that.
Makes the hell of the last 6 months worth it.

There again, picture Cable Beach. You bastard !

Oh did I mention thats its one of my most favourite towns in Australia ?

I just came back from the shop with my daughter and she asked how cold it was in melbourne. I told her that it was half of what the current temp was here and she had a jumper and trackies on. It was 18C here.

I'm in Perth with the heater on-------how depressing is that after we have been having cold water showers up there.

I'd probally have a different view if I were to go back now I spose. My cousins all moved there from down south and love it.... Me I just hate humiditiy. That's what gives me the willies about Perth in the Summer, sticky muggy yick.

Desert. Hot and dry during the day, cold at night so you can sleep. Love it.

G'dayTroy35,

A cruel man you are! It sure doesn't get much better than that and I'm still mystified as to why you would want to leave paradise - what's wrong with you? I note your qualification about the wet (not) season and you concern about having your family in Melbourne (mind you over several post you have painted this as both a positive and a negative).

Now as I will be up there for the first time in August/September this year and will be travelling with several couples including a mate that habitually outfishes me so I need to know one good spot where I can finally inflict my revenge. We'll be there for a couple of months (all of the Kimberley) and I wouldn't normally ask a fisherman for a secret spot but seeing that your leaving anyway, felt it probably wouldn't matter to you.

I know I'm appealling to your sense of humour and granted it won't be as widespread as this post of yours but rest assured if I outfish this guy his feeling of dissapointment would be equal to all EO readers.

Kind regards and hope to catch up.

G'day beatit,

Even though its great living here there is more to life than camping and fishing. The kids are getting older and there is schooling etc to think of for them. Many people end up leaving once their kids get older. Its a tough decision that we have thought about all year and still dont have an answer too.

Now onto your secret spot. I see you have a tinnie so you want somewhere that you can get out to by boat but not too far. There are lots of different spots but what works good one day might produce nothing for the next 20 days you go there. If you have a sounder a spot I used to like going to is on the other side of Roebuck Deeps which is the channel that leads into the wharf area. Launch your boat at the boat ramp that is at the end of the car park (Not the first one closest to the jetty) and head straight out until the water starts to get deep (around 90 metres) then when its starts to rise again on the other side is where you want to be. You have to search a bit using your sounder but along this edge somewhere is a really good spot for Blue bone. As for the other secret spots you will have to e-mail me as I am not going to repeat them here.

G'day Troy,

I know what you mean about kids but mine have grown up (24 and 26) but the oldest one still lives at home. So you understand why I might be trying to get away as opposed to bonding closer.

All to familiar with the vageries of fishing but there is nothing like some local knowledge to narrow down the search when time is limited. I have recently added a sounder to the tinnie so should be in a position to find changing depths without too much trouble. I appreciate this tip because my mate does not have a sounder so he could just miss out - great to have a mate like me hey - but we are competitive.

Horses for courses I guess. I suppose as long as you are happy where you are and who you're with - that's all that matters in life.

Hey there Troy

Come on down any time :) You can see where I'm talking about (our place) at:

www.omaroo.net

The RB-30? Underpowered? Yeah... a little. I've done a couple of things to pep it up though, and they do make a difference.

1) Remove the pre-heater gauze from the carby.
2) Install Genie extractors or equivalent
3) Get a good tune done by a carby specialist - and get them to overhaul it with a full kit while you're at it.

I've bought myself a full Nissan RB-30 out of a VL. It had smashed bottom ends, so I got the whole long motor for $250. I/m going to migrate all the fuel injection gear across to my motor when I get time. This should help not only power (maybe... ) but allow me to point the car skywards for longer than a minute before the carby's float bowl empties.

Failing all that - I have a roots blower sitting on the shelf..... :)

I already have extractors but was wondering where I could find the preheater gauze in the carby. That sounds like something easy to do?

Its not in the air cleaner housing is it?

Hey Troy :)

Yeah - the place is dry right now. We are in a double rain shadow too, so even when Cooma proper (16km's away) gets good rain, we just watch the clouds go overhead. The drought is really afecting the whole Cooma-Monaro area though....

Righto - the pre-heater gauze. No - it's in the carby, not in the air pre-cleaner. Four bolts to undo the carby and then it's pretty obvious where it is. I'll try and find a picture in the manual and scan it for you........ Oh! Wait! I just remembered that I lent my manual to a mate - who hasn't returned it in over 6 months :(

Troy - the power increase is not what you would call "noticable" as such - but I've heard of quite a few people removing it and then universally say that they do think it "makes it up the hill just a tad further before they have to change down..... "

I dunno - I reckon that it had a little more than before I turfed it. Hard to tell without a dyno.
