Yes and No.

The box you're referring to is the R151F (same as Prado) which comes with the 1Hz normally aspirated diesel 79series. They had problems with a shaft breaking between gearbox and transfer.

The factory TD and 4.5 litre petrol 79series have the H150F which is a much stronger box - similar box to late 80series.

I agree with you though - I'd be sticking to the earlier box.

Some go great with no problems while others are slugs with never ending problems. We've probably replaced 3 gearboxes in the last 6 months (and only have a relatively small fleet). Starts with the synchos and then...... Yes they are the only 2 gears that get used virtually but we never used to have these problems with the old 75 series even after 50K of underground thrashing. Motors still sweet as. We have a graveyard full of U/S cruisers(read - rusted away to nothing) that have donks that still run like a dream. Just wish I could get one home.....
