You might (will) get a mixture of advice from this site. Hang around and you'll be able to pick the good advice from the trumpet blowers.

What state are you in? Some states are tougher than others on RWC and the tough ones are usually better to buy from in my opnion.

Is it your first car? Where are you planning to go in the next 2 years? if your not doing any real serious travel you can get a 'leaning' 4by. Something you can smack around a bit. You can always trade up later when you have more funds later.

Check out the 'trader section' and buy from a visitor such as yourself or a member. BUT remember "member" or "visitor" means nothing when you're parting with cash.

My friend Mr Diamond got an excellent 92 Jackaroo for about 9 with around 170 km. And I mean excellent. They also made a very good diesel which shouldn't be too much dearer.

For that price i don't think you can go past the GQ patrol. The 60 series are great trucks, but the patrol is known to have one of the strongest drivelines around. As said above you just need to take the time to find a rust free one. High km's aren't normally a problem, i drove one the other month, 550,000 kms on the clock, no rebuilds, and it drove fine, couldn't pick it. the gq's are as easy to work on as the 60's but they come with the coil springs and better handling.

To get a good gq though, taking the time will get one but it will most likely be high 9's, the 60's you may be able to find one a bit cheaper as they are older.. Mate of mine just bought a 86 sahara turbo, slight rust yes, but picked it up for $4,500. can't go past a bargain like that..

Hi Grant,

As already stated, RUST is the demon in trucks that fall into your price range. Finding a 60 series with little or no rust will not be easy. The GQ patrols and 80 series are very tough and reliable trucks, but you will struggle to get a decent 80 series in that price range. There are heaps of GQ's for sale around the place, and given they sold millions new, the chance to buy a good one at a good price often presents, really a buyers market, especially given the current fuel prices, I don't think they will be selling like hotcakes.

Given it will be a QLD registered vehicle, make sure that it will pass a RWC easily or with very little work, as parts or major repairs are not cheap in 4WDs. If the seller has been the owner for a few years, it will not have been inspected recently, and may require considerable money spent to transger into your name. If you buy from interstate, you are in the same boat as it will need to have a QLD RWC to change the rego to your name in QLD.

Hi there grantb shame your not in sydney have a 60,s series round the corner from me already had alook at it myself top unit,wants10 for it but is like new no bulls@it. his old man has had it since new b/bar arb roof rack full size, air steer even got log books and guess what doesn't even have rust in the roof gutters common prob for you to watch out for, only reson havn't bought it myself wife would kill me if I change my fourby again Have fun looking

I recently purchased my first fourby, a 92 Maverick (GQ) 4.2 diesel, 5 speed. Spotless inside and out, looked like it had never been off road. $11500 from a dealer. Can't go past Patrol's reputation as a tough car. While I was looking around I saw several very decent GQ's for the money you want to spend.

My advice, get it checked first by a specialist 4wd mechanic, get a quote for any repairs (it will no doubt need something fixed) then go back to the seller with the quote and haggle.
